RESIDENT MAGISTRATE

Job Summary:
The incumbent shall exercise powers conferred by the Subordinate Court Act (1998) for hearing and deciding criminal and civil cases where the monetary jurisdiction does not exceed M18,000.00 and a fine of M30,000.00, or 18 years’ maximum imprisonment for criminal matters.
Main Duties:
- Presides over criminal trials within Resident Magistrate jurisdiction
- Conducts pre-trial enquiries and hearings involving children
- Administers oaths and affirmations
- Advises accused persons of their rights
- Conducts trials, determines admissibility of evidence, and delivers judgments
- Writes reasons for sentencing and sentences convicts
- Presides over civil cases and reviews matters from Local and Central Courts
Qualifications:
- Master of Laws (LLM) plus 2 years’ experience as a Magistrate of First Class; or
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) plus 3 years’ experience as a Magistrate of First Class
