Key responsibilities:
- Participate in and/or lead the research group’s projects in the fields of mine safety management and mining engineering;
- Perform independent research in these fields, including the formulation of research and development questions and the development of collaborative research projects with other national and international research institutes;
- Build research networks;
- Mentor and supervise junior researchers and post-graduate students;
- Contribute to strategic planning within the research group;
- Prepare proposals in order to actively pursue contract research; and
- Assist current researchers with broader group projects, including operational and financial management.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering with a safety management qualification (COMSOC 1and 2, SAMTRAC, SHEMTRAC, NEBOSH, safety management diploma, etc.) or; bachelor’s degree in safety management with a mining related qualification such as diploma in mining engineering;
- A postgraduate degree in mining engineering or safety management related filed will be an added advantage;
- Experience and a track-record of at least three or more years in mining related research and development;
- Experience in safety management in the mining industry, having three or more years of working in an operational underground mine environment;
- Experience in risk management in the mining industry, having three or more years of working in an operational underground mine environment;
- Ability to perform both fundamental and applied research in multi-disciplinary, diverse teams; and
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with others in the research group.
