Researcher (Heavy Industry)

Position

Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Researcher who will work primarily as part of Global Energy Monitor’s Heavy Industry Program, working on specific trackers within heavy industry, with a particular focus on South East Asia. The researcher may also support other GEM projects as needed. GEM’s Heavy Industry work is currently focused on iron and steel, but may expand to include cement, concrete, aluminum, hydrogen, and other sectors.

Global Energy Monitor’s Heavy Industry Program currently houses several global trackers dedicated to providing information about the global iron and steel industry, which is responsible for 11% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The Global Steel Plant Tracker (GSPT) tracks all metal production facilities with at least 500 thousand tonnes per annum crude iron/steel capacity. This tracker includes information on location, ownership, production technology, operating status, and more. The Global Blast Furnace Tracker (GBFT) tracks details about age, size, and manufacturer/model for blast furnace units at plants in the GSPT. The Global Electric Arc Furnace Feedstock Project will track details about electric arc furnace feedstocks for electric arc furnace units at plants in the GSPT. These trackers provide important information for understanding the opportunities and challenges of transitioning the global iron and steel industry to cleaner production.

The Challenge

According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.

About Global Energy Monitor

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.
