Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute (SPII) is a non-profit research and advocacy think tank committed to the promotion of dignity and the reduction of poverty and inequality through the advancement of socio-economic rights in South Africa and the sub-region.

SPII currently works through three programmes: Monitoring the Progressive Realisation of socio-economic rights with an emphasis on social security and a universal basic income, Promoting participative budgeting with an emphasis on the right to health care, and Advancing a Decent Standard of Life

SPII seeks to appoint a Researcher (Entry Level) to be based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The purpose of the position is to work closely with the Research Manager to implement SPII’s work across a number of our key projects, all of which are aligned to our focus on the reduction of poverty and inequality in South Africa through the realisation of the transformative socio-economic rights in the Constitution.

Employment duration: Fixed term contract for 4 (four) months

Reports to:Research Manager

Start date: 02 August 2021

Remuneration: R12 000 CTC (monthly).

Responsibilities:
The responsibilities will include but shall not be limited to:
Working with the Research Manager and Director, popularising socio-economic rights already undertaken by SPII;
Develop comprehensive Local Government Participative Budgeting Training Kit for stakeholders.
Enhance and build on SPII’s existing relationships and work in the field of budget advocacy;
Actively participate in advocacy and policy outreach;
Contribute to building new project partnerships
Identify and leverage opportunities to ensure that rights-based budgeting advocacy can act as a transformative tool in South Africa;
To undertake research work and to engage in research writing, and developing detailed activity plans, proposals, as well as timeous project reports for SPII and for the Donor;
Requirements:
Master’s degree in Social sciences, politics, economics, development or related field.
Minimum of three years’ work experience in research environment and socio-economic rights related work in South Africa.
Understanding of human rights law and the role of the Constitution in South African democracy, particularly in relation to socio-economic rights
Human rights budget and analysis
Must be motivated to work independently and as a member of a small team
Demonstrated ability to use initiative and take a proactive approach to work
Communication skills: confidence to speak in public and with stakeholders
Commitment to the values of SPII and a passion for social justice
Exceptional English writing skills are essential
Ability to communicate in at least one other South African language is an advantage
Social science data analysis using relevant software (e.g. STATA)
Travel requirements:
The position entails travel within SA, and possibly international, and all applicants must be willing to travel, subject to safety and health protocols.
