Research Scientist/Engineer level II ( HRL 16 )
Sappi Technology Centre requires a Research Scientist/ Engineer Level II to conduct research independently by executing product and process development projects to support and expand Sappi’s lignin business, by making use of applicable research methodologies, data analysis and documenting outcomes in reports.
The main responsibilities of this job are:
- Understand and use the various techniques to measure and characterise lignin.
- Maintain and improve technical knowledge about the application of lignin in different markets from literature reviews and technical conferences/liaisons.
- Design appropriate experiments to support the lignin sales team to address quality issues and to expand into new markets.
- Perform laboratory and pilot plant experiments independently according to quality and safety standards, published and approved methods.
- Data management, application and intermediate statistical evaluation
- Maintain and manage accurate records of research and project data
- Coordinate sample collection and sample preparation
- Coordinate mill trials, trouble shooting at mills, process and product improvement independently
- Ensure compliance with equipment maintenance and consumable stock procedures in the laboratory
- Manage and improve the quality system according to ISO 17025 standards.
- Use project management tools to plan and independently execute small projects.
- Delivers value through medium project implementation and resolving of customer complaints
- Produce proposals, reports, project closing documentation, and PCV (post completion verification), technical and safety procedures.
- Reaches scientifically accurate and defendable conclusions for small to medium projects. Research and literature reviews.
- Understand and use basic project financial calculations
- Compile and present technical and project related Intra-Sappi presentations
- Training and guiding of junior staff on research methodology, technical reporting and data interpretation
- Contribute to departmental strategy and understand regional strategy
The successful candidate should possibly have:
- Relevant 3yr degree (B Eng or relevant science degree) / B-Tech (NQF 7) with 3 years applied research / industrial experience; or
- Relevant 4yr Degree (B Eng or relevant science degree) /Post graduate diploma (NQF8) with 3 years applied research / industrial experience; or
- Relevant Masters degree (NQF9) with 1 yr applied research / industrial experience;
- A post graduate qualification in lignin / biorefinery related topic and one year applied research / industrial experience would be advantageous
