The ISS is an African non-profit organisation with offices in South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia and Senegal. Our work covers transnational crimes, migration, maritime security and development, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, crime prevention and criminal justice, and the analysis of conflict and governance.

The ISS is seeking a research officer to work on a project that is contributing to the strengthening of effective, accountable and inclusive African maritime security institutions, to be based in Pretoria.

The project equips African decision-makers with the tools for identifying priorities to guide maritime strategy implementation, including recommendations for capacity building support and international partnerships. The research officer will undertake primary and secondary research and analysis, develop policy recommendations based on the findings, and actively communicate results to ISS stakeholders through written products, verbal communication and social media. The researcher officer will report to the Maritime Project Leader and Senior Researcher.

Duration: The contract will be for one year,and may be renewed subject to ISS’ requirements, funding and satisfactory performance.

Salary: A competitive salary is offered.

Responsibilities:
Conduct primary and secondary research and analysis
Document research results in a format that is appropriate to the target audience
Assist with the dissemination of research results and policy recommendations through written products and participation in events
Assist the programme to carry out administrative and logistical activities, including but not limited to event coordination, budgets, meetings and internal ISS administrative processes
Identify target stakeholders, peer groups, donors and beneficiaries that can contribute to the ISS’ work
Assist with the implementation of effective monitoring and evaluation plans for projects
Requirements:
A minimum of a Honors qualification in the social sciences, political science, international relations, law, or a related field
At least one year of work experience in a policy, research, government, training or other maritime relevant professional environment
Knowledge of research methodology and techniques, and their application in research projects, and experience in designing and implementing research projects
A record of publishing relating to maritime security and/or governance
Experience participating in public and closed events, conferences or training courses
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage constructively with mid-level diplomats, government officials and peers
Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
Good computer skills (MS Office)
Self-motivated, able to work quickly, independently and meet deadlines
Willingness to travel
