Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation – Lesotho. The Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation – Lesotho (BCMCFL), is the result of a public-private partnership between Baylor College of Medicine International Pediatric AIDS Initiative and the Government of Lesotho, and is a legal, non-profit/tax exempt organization registered in Lesotho. BCMCFL provides free paediatric and family-centered HIV and tuberculosis prevention, care, treatment and support, serving thousands of children and families affected by HIV, TB, or other child health conditions.

BCMCFL is looking for highly qualified candidate to fill in the following position on a fixed-term contract basis for a period of one year for two studies focusing on the development of HIV Clinical prediction tools, COVID-19 outcomes and TB Diagnostics. This position is based Maseru Center of Excellence (COE)

Position: Research Nursing Assistant *1

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring study implementation in accordance with the approved study protocol at the facility.
  • Pre-screening for individuals who are potentially eligible for enrolment and approaching them and/or their caregivers for consent.
  • Conducting consenting procedures in accordance with high ethical standards.
  • Conducting all necessary face-to-face interviews or questionnaires with study participants.
  • Register participants into the CommCare system as appropriate
  • Electronic data capture including data from routine clinical records, as well as data obtained from participants and/or their caregivers.
  • Correct handling of and data capture
  • Correct and regular data transfer.
  • Filing of consent forms, source data, and key study materials.
  • Coordination of all logistics and tasks for study implementation at the facility.
  • Accurate handling of cash for study participant travel reimbursement and/or incentives where applicable.
  • Maintaining participants who miss study visits.
  • Proactive and regular reporting among the study team.
  • Proactive communication of any queries or challenges.
  • Ensuring that external quality control of collected data can take place whenever needed.
  • Working collaboratively with the clinical and study team to ensure seamless implementation of the study.
  • In the absence of the laboratory coordinator and following proper training, perform point of care testing for CRP, CD4 and urine LAM
  • In the absence or in assistance of the laboratory coordinator and following proper training, perform receipt, storage and transportation preparation of sputum, stool, gastric aspirator, mask, tongue swab and blood samples for transport to NTRL
  • In the absence or in assistance of the laboratory coordinator, prepare study masks for research participants
  • In the absence or in assistance of the laboratory coordinator, obtain and enter participant study data onto the study trackers and enter data into REDCap.
  • In the absence or in assistance of a research nurse, ensure daily clinical operations are synergistic with research efforts while maintaining quality patient care
  • In the absence or in assistance of a research nurse, properly perform specimen collection, labeling and ensure transport in children,

Educational Qualifications, Work Experience and Key Competencies

  • Certificate in Nursing Assistant
  • Must be currently licensed by the Lesotho Nursing Council
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of clinical experience of caring for TB-HIV affected children and adults
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software applications (word and excel) and internet
  • 1-year prior experience with research and database management
  • Fluency in English and Sesotho with strong report writing and oral presentation skills
  • Ability to work as a highly cooperative member of a team.
  • Ability to meet deadlines with flexibility to adapt to rapid program growth and a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to function with mature judgment, tact, and diplomacy, ensuring that protection of study participants and good clinical practice is adhered to at all times.
  • Maintenance of strict confidentiality and professional etiquette to sensitive study participant information.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and adhere to COE policies.
  • Must be a Team player with willingness to switch between duties of research assistant, assistant nurse and assisting with point of care testing as the needs of the study dictate
  • Experience in working with multi-discipline and multi-cultural team.
  • Experience with working with donors and other partners.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
