The Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC) promotes and advances human rights and the rule of law in southern Africa, primarily through strategic litigation support and capacity building. SALC provides technical and monetary support to local and regional lawyers and organisations in litigating human rights and rule of law cases in the region. SALC also provides training in human rights and rule of law issues and facilitates networks of human rights lawyers and organisations throughout southern Africa.

The Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC)’s Malawi office is seeking a Research Assistant who is currently based in Blantyre for a short-term contract position.

The Research Assistant should be a self-driven individual who is passionate about protecting and advancing human rights and the rule of law in Malawi and across the region. The Research Assistant will be reporting to the Criminal Justice Cluster Lead.

SALC promotes and advances human rights and the rule of law in Southern Africa, primarily through strategic litigation support, legal advocacy and capacity strengthening. SALC works in Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

In particular, the Research Assistant is responsible for:

Drafting legal memoranda;
Analysing legislation and cases;
Preparing research reports;
Drafting fact sheets on the law and human rights;
Attending cluster meetings;
Providing administrative support and support in filing of court process;
Assisting with the drafting of court papers;
Visiting and working with communities;
Following up on cases and liaising with clients;
Collecting data for research reports;
Organising and attending workshops and trainings;
Writing blogs/articles.

Requirements/Qualifications:

A degree in law is required;
Interest in human rights in Africa;
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and at least one local language;
Ability to work in a variety of settings;
Passionate about working with communities;
Legal and factual research skills including online sources; and
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
