POSITION: RANGE RESOURCE TECHNICAL OFFICER
DEPARTMENT: RANGE
GRADE: E

LOCATION: MAFETENG, QUTHING, QACHA’S NEK
JOB SUMMARY
The Range Resource Technical Officer is responsible for identification of denuded areas, procurement of grass seeds, reseeding and maintenance, and production of work plans and reports.
MAIN DUTIES
1. IDENTIFICATION OF DENUDED AREAS
1.1 Surveys the rangelands to select the degraded areas.
1.2 Delineates the denuded areas on the contour maps for area calculations.
1.3 Determines the level of degradation for decision making.
1.4 Holds public gatherings to agree on improvement needs of the areas.
2. PROCUREMENT OF GRASS SEEDS
2.1 Identifies the grass seeds for rehabilitation of denuded areas for range improvement.
2.2 Facilitates purchasing of grass seeds for over seeding denuded areas.
3. RE-SEEDING AND MAINTENANCE
3.1 Leads the community in the reseeding of the denuded areas for reclamation.
3.2 Oversees the maintenance of the reseeded areas for protection.
4. PRODUCTION OF WORK PLANS AND REPORTS
4.1 Prepares work plans on all activities to be implemented for concurrence of the immediate supervisor.
4.2 Compiles reports on all undertaken activities and presents them to the immediate supervisor for record keeping and evaluation.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Diploma in Forestry and Resource Conservation / Management
OR
Certificate in Agriculture plus minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a Range Assistant
OTHER KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Mapping skills
Plant identification
Knowledge of over-seeding procedures
