JOB SUMMARY

Radio Newscaster Assistant participates in the creative cycle of the news broadcast, works closely with reporters, is responsible for gathering information, broadcasting newscasts throughout the day, interviews guests, follows current events and presents news stories to audiences in an informative, interesting and unbiased way.

MAIN DUTIES

  1. Gathers the day’s news.
  2. Participates in the selection of stories to broadcast considering audience preferences.
  3. Organizes the news to present by prioritizing the most interesting pieces.
  4. Revises scripts to deliver them on-air.
  5. Ensures late-breaking news is added to newscasts.
  6. Engages in the commentary.
  7. Interviews guests and other members involved in stories.
  8. Introduces news correspondents reporting on the scene and ask them relevant questions.
  9. Complies with the moral code of the journalistic profession.
  10. Keeps abreast of news developments.
  11. Stays in contact with industry professionals.

REPRESENTATIONAL DUTIES

  1. Liaises with media houses, international organizations, and TV stations.
  2. Attends workshops and conferences on matters relating to production operations.

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Proven work experience as a news anchor
  • Understanding of the newscast process.
  • Broad knowledge of local, national, and international affairs (e.g., political, economic, legislative and cultural).
  • Comfortable and professional on air.
  • Ability to improvise in a live on-air setting.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Available to work on a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions and strict deadlines.
  • Active social media.

JOB SPECIFICATION

  • Diploma in Journalism/ Media Studies/ Mass Communication/ Broadcasting – TV and Radio or equivalent.
  • Two years of relevant work experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

For Work of Others

The job requires the incumbent to maintain smooth working relations with reporters, senior reporters, sub-editors, editors, programme producers and librarians and Head of News.

For Property (Equipment, Materials and Finance)

The job places on the incumbent responsibility to ensure the security and safety of the studio equipment, computers and recorded material in his or her custody.

For Effect of Errors

The incumbent is responsible for the errors committed by junior staff in the execution of their duties such as failure to observe safety and operational procedures, which could result in loss of property, equipment, data and software or failure to render the service.

For Safety of Others

The job places on the incumbent responsibility to enforce and ensure that proper safety and operational procedures are followed to ensure safety of personnel working under him/her.

COMPLEXITY

The incumbent regularly uses his/her own creativity to enhance the structure of the programmes.

PROBLEM-SOLVING

The incumbent regularly solves problems that are directly related to radio production and programming.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The incumbent is expected to work independently under supervision by the Editor, Subeditor, and Senior Reporter.

DEXTERITY

The job requires good eyesight, listening skills and mental capability to record programmes or produce live productions. It also requires the artistic resourcefulness of the individual.

CONTACTS

The job requires the incumbent to make contacts with:

• Senior Reporter and Sub-editor, during diary meetings and when seeking advice, guidance, and authority.

• News personnel, programme personnel and engineering daily in the execution of duties.

• Other departments and sections for co-ordination of Ministry of Communications activities.

• Other utility organizations to discuss issues of mutual interest.

• At times with the public to explain and disseminate information regarding issues relevant to his/her department.

The job requires little physical effort.

Emotional Effort

Usually, the incumbent will find himself/herself under immense pressure, especially during news or live broadcasts.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Unfavorable Conditions

The incumbent may work under very cold conditions within the studios or away during field coverage.

HAZARDS The job holder may be exposed to unprecedented attacks especially during elections or coups because of unsatisfactory electorates or stakeholders.
