JOB TITLE : PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER

JOB SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Principal Secretary, the Public Relations Officer will disseminate and communicate publicity campaigns to the community. He/she will participate in the publicity feedback surveys (online, interviews, group discussions, opinion polls listenership/readership and viewership surveys etc.), and report to the Principal Secretary on a day to day activities.
MAIN DUTIES
1.0 To participate in stakeholders/public education and publicity about government activities, objectives and services
1.1 To take part in the design of educational and publicity campaigns.
1.2 To partake in educational and publicity outreach campaigns (road shows, exhibitions, events/Public gatherings/Pitso’s)
1.3 To write scripts and compile footage for media dissemination.
1.4 To draft Information, Education and Communication material.
1.5 To participate in educational and publicity feedback surveys (online, interviews, group discussions, opinion polls listenership/readership and viewership surveys etc.).
2.0 Internal Communication
2.1 Lead the drafting of internal newsletter/magazine.
2.2 To Communicate messages through intranet.
2.3 To display general messages on notice boards.
3.0 To monitor Media content
3.1 To listen to, read and view different media, in order to know what is said about the Ministry and its activities.
3.2 To conduct research on media, range and focus/interest area.
JOB SPECIFICATION
Master’s Degree in Public Relations/Communications/Media Studies.
OR
Honours Degree in Public Relations/Communications/Media Studies with two (2) years working experience as a Senior Assistant Public Relations Officer.
OR
Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations/Communications/Media Studies plus three (3) years’ working experience as Assistant Public Relations Officer.
RESPONSIBILITIES
For work of others:
The incumbent has responsibility for supervising and directing all Public Relations Unit staff.
For safety of others:
This factor is minimal.
For property of others:
The incumbent is responsible for safekeeping of valuable assets and documents within his/her jurisdiction.
COMPLEXITY
The job demands ability to read comprehensive documents and read press release and the coverage of all ministerial events etc.
Problem solving:
The incumbent is responsible to liaise the ministry with the public and to ensure that the reputation of the ministry appears positive to the public.
DEXTERITY
The incumbent advices about all public relations matters at a ministerial level. The job needs enormous skills, mental and visual.
Contacts:
Makes regular contact with the Principal Secretary and those under his/her supervision levels when carrying out day to day duties.
Mental effort:
The job requires very high mental effort when public matters are discussed. There is a lot of courage involved.
For effect of Errors:
The task requires massive responsibility for supervising the application of security measures, where any error would result in severe adverse effects on the whole of Government.
Supervision Received:
The incumbent is expected to work independently most of the time and report to Chief Accounting Officer.
Emotional Effort:
This job requires the incumbent to be able to solve work-related problems among members of staff, other Ministries and Departments.
