Internship Summary:
The intern will have a university degree and some experience and training in psychology or social work and be passionate about and have a high aptitude about social and familial dynamics, human development and mental health. After adequate training and supervision, the intern will facilitate training modules in various psychological and coping strategies both in groups and on a one-one basis, using brief counselling methodologies and Help Lesotho’s extensive body of proven materials. All aspects of the work will promote mental health, personal responsibility, cognitive development and good decision making. The PSSI will document processes, conduct impact measurement and evaluation of approaches, harvest lessons learned and support all staff in their programs and professional lives, as needed. The PSSI will be an insightful, positive and compassionate person with a high degree of psychological insight. The PSSI will be trained by Dr. Peg Herbert and mentored by our experienced PSS specialist to take on progressive responsibilities. The PSSI will commit to ongoing training and skill development in PSS, facilitation, and staff support. The PSSI will start as a Level 3 Professional Intern (the highest level) and will be evaluated for renewal and/or advancement after six months.


Internship Description:

Help facilitate PSS content to Help Lesotho program participants;

Help support quality control of program PSS content, delivery and facilitation in training workshops, camps and conferences according to the program outlines and objectives;

Participate in the development of PSS discussion materials for various populations (ex. adolescents, youth and teachers);

Help supervise, motivate, manage and build the PSS capacity of the facilitation staff;

Assist to plan, facilitate and report on PSS training for the Professional Internship Program;

Become certified as a CHANGE4ce Facilitator;

Receive training to deliver one-on-one PSS with program participants and staff in person and over the phone;

Train youth and grandmothers as ‘peer workers’ for basic PSS support;

Help write narrative reports for grants and donor communications;

Document PSS issues and meetings;

Contribute to social media posts;

Maintain a monthly time sheet of activities with analysis, identification of issues of concern, success or impact;

Regularly report on activities, successes and challenges; and

Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualification:

Commitment to the values of Help Lesotho and the power of young people to lead;

University degree in psychology or social work;

Teamwork skills;

Demonstrate understanding of vulnerable beneficiary issues and contexts;

Completion of Help Lesotho’s Leaders-in-Training program;

Some demonstrated experience in leadership, PSS, and other related fields;

Open to learning and growing on a continual basis;

Knowledge of and commitment to SRH, HIV/AIDS prevention and gender equity issues;

Experience with narrative reports;

Exceptional leadership abilities;

High level of interpersonal and communication skills;

Passion for PSS, social work, facilitation and helping others; and

Well-developed written and oral skills in English and Sesotho.
