With an emphasis on independent thinking, sustainable development and multiple partnerships, UJ is an international university of choice.The Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development (PsyCaD), offers a broad spectrum of psychological and educational services to children, adolescents, students and staff with the aim of enhancing their psychological fitness to manage personal life challenges, increase productivity and to optimize their performance. Services include: Individual, couple, family and group counselling, trauma counselling, psychological and educational assessments, career counselling and development services.

The successful incumbent will be responsible for providing basic assessment, psychological and career development interventions to clients of PsyCaD towards personal, academic and career success, while adhering to professional, institutional and national legislation, policies and guidelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of intern Psychologists
  • Individual therapy /Counselling
  • Group therapy
  • Psycho-education workshops (small and large groups) for students, departments and faculties.
  • Crisis interventions and trauma debriefing.
  • Assist with the activities and information resources in PsyCaD, including interactive web-based resources.
  • Participate in relevant project and programme delivery as required within the PsyCaD context.
  • Responsible for professional administrative functions.
  • An accredited Master’s Degree, and current registration with the HPCSA, in the category:
    Educational Psychology.
  • Personal indemnity insurance.
  • HPCSA registration as an Educational Psychologist for 3 years.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Professional Psychological skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, career consultation and facilitation skills.
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Skilled in use of psychometric assessment instruments.
  • Proficiency in using a PC, Microsoft Office programs, and the Internet.
  • A sound understanding of professional and ethical principles and relevant legislation.

Recommendations:

  • Experience in supervising Educational Psychology interns
  • Experience of student counselling.
  • Experience in the facilitation of psycho-educational and career development workshops.
  • Flexibility to work on a rotational basis between campuses in order to meet students’ needs.
  • Sound psychology theoretical foundation.
  • Experience in the use of a number of psychotherapeutic modalities.
  • Excellent knowledge base in Psychometry.
  • Knowledge of web based/ online platforms or a willingness to learn.
