Under the supervision of the Common Services Officer (Property), the Property Assistant develops a program for the maintenance, repair, upkeep and security of all crown-owned and leased properties; maintains working relations with appropriate suppliers and contractors; liaises with owners of leased properties on maintenance and repair work; determines the service requirements to meet the needs of the mission’s properties; gathers data for the development of the property budget and performs other duties.

Essential qualifications:

Essential qualifications

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.
Education:

  • Minimum diploma in a related field (for example Built Environment or Business Administration) from a recognized post-secondary institution

Language:

  • Fluency in English (written and oral)

Experience:

  • Recent experience* in client service; liaising and working with clients (internal or external) in an office environment.
  • Recent experience* working with a range of computer applications
  • Recent experience* in planning and delivery of property management/maintenance services or in managing properties or supervising construction jobs

  • Recent experience is defined as a minimum of three (3) years within the last 10 years.

Rated Requirements
The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessmentKnowledge of:

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who have the following asset qualifications. If candidates meet the factors listed in the asset qualifications, they must also clearly demonstrate how they meet these factors in their covering letter and CV.

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university
  • Previous experience working in a diplomatic mission, or in an international agency in managing Property or Procurement portfolios
  • Experience working or studying in a North American or Western European Country or working with a North American or Western European organization
  • Fluency in French (written and oral)

Organizational Needs:

Operational Requirements:

  • Must be able to work overtime as required (sometimes at short notice)
  • Paid leave & vacation might be limited during the high season i.e. from 01 July until 15 September
  • Valid South African driver’s license

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • South African citizenship, holder of a valid South Africa residence permit or otherwise legally able to work at the High Commission (please note The High Commission of Canada does not sponsor work authorizations directly or indirectly).
  • Able to obtain and maintain a Government of Canada Reliability Status Clearance. Please note that the Reliability Status Clearance must be maintained throughout your employment at the Embassy as failure to do so may result in dismissal. This includes a criminal and credit background check.
  • Ability to meet the medical requirements as defined by the employer. Candidate may be required to lift up to 32kgs, climb ladders/external stairs, work at heights or in confined spaces. Successful candidate(s) may be required to undergo a medical evaluation.
