Projects Materials Controller ( HRL 15U )

Sappi Southern Africa requires a Materials Controller to co-ordinate and ensure the efficient and effective supply and flow of timber on road and rail from the private suppliers into the KZN Mills according to the various demands and ensure that the timber quality control systems are in accordance with the Sappi standards.

This role reports to the Resources Manager – KZN

The main responsibilities of this job are:

  • Collect official timber orders from Project Managers and proactively compile sales plan on procurement supplies in line with the mill demands and according to budget and forecast
  • Ensure orders are captured on Timber Control System (TCS) in line with the sales plan in order to warrant mills, transporters and suppliers’ alignment
  • Monitor and control major suppliers’ performance versus order by means of the daily, weekly and TCS reports to ensure rateably timber deliveries and order adjustments where necessary
  • Communicate stock levels, production performance and turnaround times (TAT) daily through the respective communication channels to align daily deliveries
  • Keep record of rejects, analyse trends and institute corrective and preventative actions to minimum timber losses, reduce turnaround times and minimise disruptions at the mill
  • Carry out site visitations to assess sidings and depot stocks to ensure rateable and within specification timber supply
  • Compile weekly and monthly forecasts in line with quarterly forecast and annual budget plan to monitor the rate and cost of delivery
  • Report on critical timber supplies and deliveries and ensure this is communicated to the Resources Manager, Project Managers and Hauliers which might lead to the review of the delivery plans
  • Handle all source key requests from major suppliers in line with the chain of custody (CoC) requirements to guarantee compliance
  • Assist with internal audits by supplying required information for quality assurance and conformance with the chain of custody (CoC)
  • Ensure and/or assist with the booking of online slots for timber supply into various markets in order to align deliveries with sales plan
  • Ensure that the procurement and coordination budget is in line with the plan and report monthly
  • Understand the KZN Forestry Resources budgets and provide input on the procurement of timber and related services.
  • Scan and distribute rejection reports daily to the suppliers to ensure that non-conformances are addressed
  • Ensure that the following month’ sales plan is compiled, confirmed and submitted through to logistics to warrant timeous capturing and communication to the suppliers and hauliers
  • Ensure that daily woodyard stocks, rail report, mill performance and TAT reports are forwarded to the Resources Manager, Projects/Procurement Managers and hauliers and suppliers to proactively align deliveries with agreed order
  • Submit monthly report on the timber flow and budget alignment in line with the mill demand
  • Ensure compliance to all SHEQ policies, procedures, best practices and work instructions suppliers and Hauliers
  • Educate the Project and Procurement Managers, Hauliers and Suppliers team on the KZN Mills’ requirements and monitor adherence to standards, policies and procedures
  • Assist Safety and Risk managers with related incident and accident investigations

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A Logistics and/or Transport Management qualification
  • National Diploma in Forestry or related qualification will be advantageous
  • At least 5 years’ experience in timber procurement and/or forestry management.
