Masifundise is a civil society organisation with a long track record in the small-scale fishing sector. Its aim is to promote and advance human rights and Food Sovereignty in small-scale fishing communities in South Africa, and globally. Masifundise empowers fishers and community-based activists to become agents of change in order to to become agents of change within their own communities, organisations, and social movements, as well as facilitating and strengthening participatory governance, enabling fishing communities to secure their social, economic, and political rights and promoting principles of social, economic and environmental justice.

Masifundise seeks to employ a part- time (12 days a month) self-motivated, independent, critical and analytical thinker as Project Officer to our Global Movement Building sub-programme to be based in Cape Town, South Africa.

As a member of the programme team, you will work closely with and be responsible to the Programme Manager. A central purpose of the job is to facilitate and support the activities of Africa Regional Advisory Group for the implementation of the Small-scale Fisheries Guidelines, in the role of the secretariat for the group.

Starting date :1 September 2021 – 31 August 2022

Responsibilities:
Facilitate communication and activities of the Regional Advisory Group Produce reports of internal meetings, international events and support for project reporting Plan, coordinate and execute relevant research activities in collaboration with Regional Advisory Group and International Secretariat.
Participate in relevant conferences and meeting to give support to the Regional Advisory Group delegates, note taking and reports.
Support fundraising efforts of the Regional Advisory Group Ensure that communications and documents are translated in English, French, Portuguese.
Create and generate contents for the social network of the Regional Advisory Group.
Support the logistic work for the online videocalls, virtual conferences/ conferences and face-to-face meetings.
Support event and workshop organization, strengthening of activism and voluntary network, maintenance and construction of new partnerships for the Regional Advisory Group.
Prepare presentation and research briefs on relevant issues related to the implementation of the Small-scale Fisheries Guidelines in the African continent.
Requirements:
An Honours or post graduate Masters’ degree in Political Science, Sociology, Social Science, Development Studies, Geography, Fishery Management, Law or a related discipline.
A minimum of 3 year of relevant and/or related experience.
Applicants with relevant experience in research and work in the context of small-scale fishing communities, other small-scale food producers and food governance at continental and global level will have a strong advantage.
Proven analytical and writing skills (based on writing samples).
Working knowledge of French. Ability to work independently and to tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
Ability to work with flexibility in a fast-paced environment.
Computer skills including Microsoft Office Package and web research.
Willingness to travel to attend meetings and workshops when appropriate.
