Newtoro Books is a nonprofit mobile library organization dedicated to promoting literacy, expanding access to books, and supporting youth development across Lesotho. Through its mobile library services, Newtoro reaches readers in all ten districts of the country, delivering books directly to communities and readers’ doorsteps. The organization works to strengthen a culture of reading while providing resources that support literacy, self-development, and lifelong learning. In addition to promoting reading, Newtoro also supports youth through career guidance initiatives that encourage educational growth, skills development, and informed career pathways.
Position Summary
The Project Officer supports the implementation and management of Newtoro’s library initiatives and literacy programs. The position is responsible for coordinating day-to-day library activities, supporting reading programs, managing library resources, and strengthening engagement with schools and communities.
The role plays an important part in expanding access to books and supporting community-based learning through well-organized library services and outreach activities.
Key Responsibilities
Library Program Implementation
- Coordinate and support the implementation of Newtoro library programs and literacy initiatives.
- Assist in organizing reading programs, storytelling sessions, and reading clubs for children and youth.
- Support book distribution and reading promotion initiatives in communities and schools.
Library Operations
- Support day-to-day operations of library spaces and programs.
- Assist with organizing, cataloguing, and maintaining library books and materials.
- Track book circulation and ensure proper management of library resources.
Community Engagement and Outreach
- Support outreach activities that promote reading and library use in communities.
- Engage with schools, community groups, and partners to increase participation in library programs.
- Assist in organizing community events, literacy workshops, and reading campaigns.
Program Administration and Reporting
- Maintain records of library activities, participation, and program outputs.
- Support preparation of activity reports and documentation for internal and external purposes.
- Assist with monitoring participation and outcomes of literacy initiatives.
Partnerships and Collaboration
- Support coordination with schools, community organizations, and volunteers involved in literacy activities.
- Assist in maintaining positive relationships with program partners and stakeholders.
Resource and Content Support
- Assist in identifying and organizing books and educational materials suitable for library programs.
- Support the development of culturally relevant reading resources and activities.
Qualifications
Education
Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, Education, Community Development, Social Sciences, Project Management, Business Administration or a related field.
Experience
- Experience working in libraries, literacy programs, or community initiatives is preferred.
- Experience working with children, youth, or community programs is an asset.
