The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance in South Africa (SAAPA SA) is a small non-governmental public health and human rights organisation, set up in 2012, that advocates for a legislative environment that will help to make South Africa an alcohol-safer country.

We are looking to appoint a Project Manager to our team who will be responsible for the full oversight and implementation of specific projects. These projects will contribute to our advocacy work for policy change and will assist communities to empower themselves to be able to exercise their right to influence when, where and how alcohol is sold and consumed in their neighbourhoods. The Project Manager’s job will encompass the following core activities:

PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Managing and coordinating the implementation of project-related activities
Developing clear project plans, identifying key deliverables, milestones and deadlines
Recruiting, training and supervising community-based staff, interns and consultants to ensure achievement of project objectives
Mobilising goods and services to support project activities, including drafting ToRs
Managing and monitoring project risks
Ensuring adherence to procurement, financial and admin policies and procedures
Preparing project progress reports against planned deliverables according to agreed timeframe
NETWORKING
Growing our network of Alliance Partners and developing strong working relationships with them.
Engaging with stakeholders in the Southern African Region to share ideas and reflect on lessons learnt
Building networks of support amongst community-based structures across the country, identifying potential partners and resources to recruit or work with in support of policy change and project objectives
Identifying opportunities for deepening the cooperation between stakeholders
Maintaining regular communication on relevant project issues with all stakeholders/partners during project implementation
Building effective relationships with appropriate government officials in relevant departments in all three spheres of government
DONOR PROPOSALS AND REPORTING
Assisting in preparation of new donor funding applications
Supporting the maintenance of effective linkages with current and potential donors
Regular reporting on project activities for inclusion in reports to donors
ADVOCACY
Working with Director and Media and Communications Manager in Initiating specific and appropriate campaigns to lobby support and advocate for public awareness and policy change, in line with SAAPA SA’s overall programme and with specific project activities and objectives
POLICY
Keeping abreast of government’s alcohol-related policy and legislative initiatives, if any
Keeping abreast of trends within the alcohol industry and related sectors
Keeping abreast of best practice trends and policy initiatives, in the SADC region and internationally, in pursuit of a reduction in the harmful use of alcohol
QUALIFICATIONS AND/OR COMPETENCIES
The following minimum qualifications and/or competencies are required:-
Graduate/post graduate degree with previous working experience of at least 5 years in project management, preferably in an advocacy or activist role within the development sector, ideally within public health
Good project management skills; project planning, monitoring and evaluation, donor reporting, donor proposals
Good networking and relationship management skills
Good operational skills, delivery orientated with the ability to get things done
Familiarity with non-profit sector and/or community based organisations and community structures/forums
Fully conversant with social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, FB, etc.
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Excellent written and spoken English, other South African languages a definite advantage
