Project Lead (9-month part-time contract) Cape Town / Postmasburg / Dealesville
Nal’ibali is a national reading-for-enjoyment campaign that builds a culture of reading in homes, schools and communities. Nal’ibali seeks a Project Lead to drive an innovative, community-wide project funded by two solar power companies whose ultimate aim is to create communities that support and demonstrate reading culture. The project has the potential to run for up to a decade – an opportunity to create lasting change for a generation of children.
The funders have earmarked 2022 as a year for research, design, and testing new approaches. A project plan with a strong “do-learn-reflect-adapt” agenda has been approved. Nal’ibali seeks a high-performing person to steward the project through these plans. This work will culminate in a multi-year proposal for a well-researched, evidence-based, contextually relevant approach to building a culture of reading across four small towns in rural South Africa.
The successful candidate will work with a project coordinator, a team of six fieldworkers (3 per province), Nal’ibali’s specialist team, and the funder to execute the design grant vision and build for the future.
This is a part-time contract role (~11 days per month) for a 9-month period (April-Dec 2022). Preferred location is either Cape Town or Johannesburg, with ~1 week per month on site (in Postmasburg, Northern Cape or Dealesville, Free State) and ~6 additional days of work. There is some flexibility around location and scheduling, but regular time on-site is a must.
Role and responsibilities:
1. Ensure intentions and strategy of design grant plan are delivered.
Support project coordinator to develop an operational plan that is well-aligned to the strategic project goals.
Coordinate execution across Nal’ibali teams.
Check in regularly on progress, and ensure we are delivering, reflecting, adapting and improving.
Support the team to problem-solve and change course as needed based on what we are learning.
