Lawyers for Human Rights (Swaziland) (LHR(S)) is a trust not for-profit established in terms of Notarial Deed of Donation Trust no. 32 of 2003 in terms of the laws of Eswatini.

Under the project titled “Strengthening the Implementation of Economic, Social and Cultural (ESC) Rights in Eswatini” in collaboration with the International Commission of Jurists, the LHR(S) is recruiting a Project Coordinator to help LHR(S) strengthen the ability of civil society, lawyers and magistrates to assert ESC rights. The ideal candidate will be a dedicated human rights lawyer familiar with social, economic, and cultural rights in Eswatini. The employment contract will be for a period of 15 months starting 1 May 2020 and the position will be based in Mbabane, Eswatini.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting directly to the LHR(S) Trustees and with a functional reporting line to the ESCR Legal Adviser of the project implementation partner, the Project Coordinator will have the following responsibilities:
Consultations with project stakeholders;
Organising of training for civil society organisations and lawyers;
Organising of judicial symposia and ESCR seminar for magistrates;
Supporting strategic litigation and trial monitoring;
Research on ESCR;
Data gathering for monitoring and evaluation;
Project reporting;
Any other actions required to successfully implement the project.
QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education & Experience
A degree in law, preferably with a focus on international human rights law. A masters degree may be an advantage;
Minimum three years experience working for the promotion of human rights in Eswatini, in particular for socio-economic rights;
Knowledge of the functioning of the International and African human rights architecture, especially as it relates to socio-economic rights, is an asset;
A proven track record in high level human rights advocacy will be an advantage.
Experience working on sexual and gender-based violence would be an advantage.
Essential Skills
Excellent political judgment and the proven ability to network with a wide array of organizations and role players;
Strong analytical and organizational skills;
Openness and flexibility, capacity to adapt to changing priorities and needs.
Proven communication skills. Excellent written and spoken English as well as Swati or other local languages;
Knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
