Sonke Gender Justice seeks to appoint a Project Coordinator to be based in Johannesburg.

About the position

The Project Coordinator will provide project coordination and technical input for the Masiphephe Network project funded by the Centre for Communication Impact (CCI), including supervision and coordination of junior staff. The goal of the project is to contribute to the realisation of human rights and gender equality by building active and empowered local communities that hold governments accountable for the implementation of legislation and policies, aimed at preventing and responding to GBV and promoting gender equality. The Project Coordinator reports to the Community Education and Mobilisation Unit Manager.

Specific responsibilities:

1. Project Management
Planning and coordination of the CCI Masiphephe Network project.
Implementation of activities according to plans and budgets, donor requirements in line with quality standards in ways that are responsive to community’s needs.
Ensure that project development and implementation are responsive to communities and partners, and is consistent with the relevant program guidelines, principles, values, quality standards and overall programme and organizational strategic plan.
Manage a team of Community Mobilisers, oversee the Gender Based Forum, and Community Action Team volunteers (CATs).
Compile comprehensive monthly, quarterly, and annual reports with action plans of the project.
Ensure feedback from communities and stakeholders are regularly collected, documented, and timeously responded to.
Regularly monitor potential risks, and implementation challenges and together with all project staff and consortium members, work with other partners to proactively seeking solutions.
Provide regular updates on the status of the project implementation to Sonke’s CEM Unit Manager and CCI management team.
Identify, manage, and facilitate technical training for government partners, project beneficiaries and project staff.
Monthly donor report writing.
 2. Partnership and Representation

With Sonke’s CEM Unit Manager, represent Sonke in CCI consortium meetings and other relevant engagements and update the rest of the team on the outcomes of such meetings.

Work closely with the Masiphephe consortium members and the CCI management team for day-to-day implementation of the project activities.

Participate in community, provincial and national meetings, networks, and ensure Sonke’s project implementation is aligned and coordinated with similar efforts of the consortium partners, other civil society organisations and the government.

 3. Budget Management
Monitor budgets, making sure prior authorization is secured from respective Sonke and donor officials in the case of over and under expenditure.
Ensure adherence to the donor’s guidelines, Sonke’s internal control procedures, as well as financial management guidelines during the utilisation and management of organisational resources.
Ensure resources are used only for the intended purpose with maximum efficiency.
 4. General
Represent Sonke externally in conferences, dialogues, symposiums and in stakeholder meetings when required to.
Attend staff meetings, staff retreats, staff trainings including international meetings as required.
Attend stakeholder meetings, donor meetings and conferences where necessary.
Network strategically with existing community networks, educational institutions, NPOs and government.
Qualifications and experience
University degree in Social Sciences -gender studies, political science, or any related field
Master’s degree in social sciences or related field is advantageous.
Very good knowledge of gender-based violence causes and impact in South Africa.
Experience in promoting gender equality, human rights, and social justice.
Knowledge of gender transformative work with men and boys, including primary social change strategies, is an advantage.
Demonstrate an appreciation of the multicultural nature of the organisation and the diversity of its staff.
Demonstrated technical expertise in project management, budget and resource management, training, and donor reporting.
Experience in monitoring and evaluation and results-based management.
Proven knowledge in grants management an advantage.
Experience in stakeholders and donors’ relations.
Skills required
Budgeting and financial management.
Ability to prepare and provide training.
Capacity to network as well as develop and maintain relationships (internal and external).
Good presentation and facilitation skills.
Excellent written and spoken English and the ability to speak at least one South African language.
Ability to work independently, take initiative and to work with a diverse team.
Supervision and management skills.
