The Equality Unit (EqU) promotes collective action towards social justice and discourse regarding social asymmetries at Stellenbosch University (SU). The Unit coordinates, educates and raises awareness around equality, gender, HIV/Aids, GBV and unfair discrimination among students and staff. The Unit is further responsible for the coordination and implementation of SU’s policies on Unfair Discrimination & Harassment and HIV/Aids.

Duties:

This position entails the coordination of a comprehensive institutional HIV-and-sexualities strategy for Stellenbosch University that aims to realise an inclusive, value-driven campus with an enabling environment, free from unfair discrimination, harassment and victimization, as well as the prevention and support services needed for student and staff success to be promoted. To reach this mission, the main activities and performance indicators include training, facilitation and mentoring, student and organisation liaison, networking with staff and students at main and satellite campuses regarding issues of HIV, Aids, gender, sexuality, MSM, LGBTQIA+, social justice and other current narratives, coordinating HST campaigns, condom and lube distribution and facilitating dialogues and social discussion groups. This post is also instrumental in implementing the Higher Health initiatives and grant expectations.
Representing and actively contributing to relevant forums (including student forums and organisations) and/or networks within SU and the HE sector;
Networking with and building strategic alliances and relationships with key stakeholders (student sand staff) within SU;
Advocating for inclusion of social justice, HIV, gender, sexualities, LGBTQIA+ and MSM at SU and the HE sector;
Creating and maintaining collaboration with students, student organisations and movements within SU;
Developing and facilitating training and mentoring of student leaders /peer educators;
Developing and facilitating in-curriculum lectures, short courses, workshops and training for students and staff (in-person, online / on social media);
Availability for training, presentations and attending student meetings and initiatives outside usual office hours (during the evenings and over weekends) as needed;
Coordinating and supervising support for HST at office and FTF and other HIV testing campaigns;
Condom and lube distribution coordination;
Managing materials including stocktaking, orders and storage of HCT materials, condoms, and other safe sex material;
Monitoring and evaluation, record-keeping and reporting.
Job requirements:
A relevant postgraduate qualification (e.g. education, psychology, political science, social work, etc.);
A minimum of two years’ relevant work experience (including experience in HCT and training/facilitation);
Thorough knowledge of HIV, gender and sexualities as well as social justice;
Thorough knowledge and experience in HIV testing and counselling;
Knowledge and experience in monitoring and evaluation (M&E);
Fluency in two official South African languages (including English);
Excellent facilitation and training skills (both in-person and online);
The ability to build and sustain networks and relationships with students and staff on all levels.

Recommendations:
Proficiency in isiXhosa;
Knowledge and understanding of relevant national policies and legislation;
Experience in the higher education sector;
A valid driver’s licence.
