About the Department of War (DOW) Project
Department of War (DOW) is a project supporting the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF), the uniform and non-uniform security services of the country as well as their direct beneficiaries.
The project started on a smaller scale in 2005 with the design and implementation of HIV prevention programmes, which focused primarily on training of military personnel in HIV prevention and HIV testing and reinforcing the capacity to increase uptake of HIV counselling and testing services.
Until 2012, when Voluntary Male Circumcision (VMMC) services were launched, which were fully integrated in the services provided at Thomas Wellness Centre in Makoanyane and are sustained by the institution beyond project life.
The project supports the military with lab strengthening activities towards its accreditation.
Under DOW Project, the Professional Nurse will be deployed to work as part of the clinical team providing comprehensive HIV services within Makoanyane Thomas Wellness Centre. They will be responsible for the provision of ART (Anti-Retroviral Therapy) services, Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (EMTCT), Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) services, TB screening and Anti TB Treatment, Cervical Cancer screening services and other services provided as required by the facility. The Professional Nurses will provide the services using the differentiated service delivery model.
What You’ll Do
The incumbent must be able to perform all the following duties and responsibilities:
- Supervises the military nursing assistants and student nurses working in the Military facilities.
- Provide TB prophylaxis to all eligible clients.
- Ensure continuation of ethical index testing service provision for all ART clients.
- Perform TB screening to all patients visiting the facilities for health care services.
- History taking of the patients/clients and finding out if they have any current problems which may need attention.
- Initiate newly identified HIV clients on Prescribe medications for ART and TB on checkups and refer complicated cases to the doctor.
- Checking basic parameters e.g. Blood pressure (BP), checking Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC, body weight and height calculating the body mass index (BMI). Check the temperature to PMTCT clients as per national guidelines.
- Provide services to ART clients, PMTCT clients, TB clients and Under Five Clients and address their HIV care needs accordingly i.e. draw blood samples for DNA PCR in 6 weeks’ children, viral load and CD4 in adults according to the guidelines.
- Reinforce the adherence counselling before she/he dispenses the ARVs to ART clients.
- Provide the services according to the Lesotho National Guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Quality Assurance
- Be familiar with QA compliance objectives and ensure that SOP standards are met in daily clinic service delivery.
- Ensure that all the necessary commodities are always available for smooth service delivery.
- Participate in quality assurance and improvement procedures.
- Work according to SOPs, guidelines and policies.
- Ensure validity of data in the client files and registers.
What You’ll Bring
- Diploma in Nursing, with a minimum of 3–4 years nursing experience especially in the clinics.
- Degree in Nursing with a minimum of 2 years nursing experience, especially in the clinics.
- Be a valid member of the Lesotho Nursing Council and possesses a license to practice as a nurse in Lesotho.
- Computer literacy preferred.
- Fluency in English and Sesotho.

- Be knowledgeable of Nursing ethics and etiquette.
- Understanding of reproductive health issues, especially HIV/AIDS and TB.
- Demonstrated ability to work sensitively and compassionately with a diverse range of clients, including Military, other uniformed personnel and their families.
