Taylor & Francis Group, a leading academic publishing company, is looking for a proactive and motivated Production Editor to join their international publishing team in Cape Town.

The Production Editor will join our fast-paced journals production team. As the primary production contact in South Africa, they will be responsible for managing the flow of content on a portfolio of academic journals; building key relationships with local co-publishing partners, academic editors, and other stakeholders; working with third party suppliers; and providing strong customer service to ensure the full journal production process is successfully achieved across a large portfolio of journal titles. This is a varied and demanding role that would suit proactive candidates with production experience. Experience in the Journals publishing industry is an advantage, but not required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the flow of content on a portfolio of academic journals (titles) to agreed speed and quality targets.
  • Acting as primary liaison (in collaboration with Regional Production Specialist) to co-publishing partners to ensure that co-published titles are published according to agreed production schedules.
  • Updating and maintaining a monthly copy flow report and working closely with the Editorial team to ensure annual page budgets and production schedules are met.
  • Working with supplier partners to ensure targets are met.
  • Managing external stakeholders’ expectations.
  • Completing multiple tasks to deadlines.
  • Being the point of contact for stakeholders at the product level.
  • Conducting data analysis and problem solving to drive process improvement.
  • Recognizing process improvement opportunities and making recommendations.
  • Maintaining accurate records and updating content management systems.
  • Assuring cost control against budgets, financial planning and budget reviews.
  • Invoicing and Payment processing, where necessary.
  • Providing excellent and empathic customer service.
  • Effective communication with the rest of the team, both locally and internationally.
  • Working closely with UK Production Department colleagues and staying up to date with latest updates, advances, changes to production workflows, systems and services.
  • Assisting on department projects as required.

Desired skills and experience

  • A strong command of English grammar and academic styles.
  • Knowledge of various production processes.
  • Industry and market awareness.
  • Knowledge and experience of process-driven workflows.
  • Experience of working with external suppliers and partners.
  • Experience of working in a customer-facing role.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software, content management and/or customer relationship management systems.

  • Excellent organization skills and confidence in completing multiple tasks to deadlines.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, oral and written.

The position is based in Taylor & Francis’ Cape Town office, and reports to the Regional Production Specialist who is based in the UK office at Milton Park.
