Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Principal – Primary School, tenable in the Teaching Service for Government and Church-Owned Primary Schools across Lesotho.

NOTE:
All positions are open to both qualified unemployed teachers and serving teachers who have acquired higher qualifications.

JOB SUMMARY

The Principal shall provide effective and efficient leadership and management in all academic, administrative, and co-curricular aspects of the school.
He or she serves as the Chief Accounting Officer and Secretary to the School Board.


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Administration

  • Lead the preparation, review, and evaluation of the school’s strategic and annual operational plans, subject to School Board approval.
  • Prepare and submit the annual school budget and financial statements within three months after the end of each school year.
  • Supervise and ensure proper maintenance of school records in line with the Education Act and related regulations.
  • Promote meaningful teaching and quality learning in accordance with MOET curriculum standards.
  • Conduct performance evaluations for teachers and other staff reporting to the principal.
  • Maintain staff discipline in line with the Ministry’s disciplinary code.
  • Enforce learner discipline per the school’s code of conduct.
  • Submit accurate statistical data to MOET within three months of the new school year or as required.
  • Foster strong relationships with the community, school partners, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the Teaching Service Department (TSD) to maintain proper staffing and establishment levels.
  • Manage and control school funds responsibly and in compliance with financial regulations.

2. Teaching

While the Principal’s teaching load may be significantly reduced, the following are core instructional responsibilities:

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lessons tailored to learners’ needs and abilities.
  • Teach in accordance with national guidelines and school curriculum requirements.
  • Share teaching expertise and mentor other teachers.
  • Provide feedback on teaching methods, learner assessment, and class management.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among learners.
  • Carry out other duties as outlined in the Principal’s Manual.

  • Ability to inspire and motivate teachers and learners.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Diplomacy and ability to build effective relationships with the school community and external partners.

JOB SPECIFICATION

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Education or equivalent + at least 2 years as Senior Teacher I with satisfactory performance and requisite competencies; OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education (B.Ed) or equivalent + 3 years as Deputy Principal; OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education (B.Ed) or equivalent + at least 5 years as Senior Teacher I with satisfactory performance and requisite competencies.

Added Advantage:

  • Minimum of 3 years of continuous experience in senior school administration or leadership position.
  • Completion of school administration and leadership training or related courses.
