Purpose of the Job

The principal investigator will lead all aspects of the AMBI-ONE multi-centre study of single dose liposomal amphotericin B for the treatment of cryptococcal meningitis and other studies as necessary.

Reporting Structure

The principal Investigator AMBI-ONE and other Studies report to the HIV/TB Advisor and Or Coordinator.

Job Overview
The principal investigator for AMBI-ONE and other studies will lead the AMBI-ONE study and other studies from protocol writing until publication of the final manuscript.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

  • To develop and submit the study protocol including consent forms and case report forms local ERBs, after having agreed upon the specific objectives of each study with referents and medical coordinators in each field.
  • To develop a study database in Red Cap for the AMBI-ONE study.
  • To create and coordinate the study investigation team.
  • To ensure continuous coordination and communication between different partners involved in the study outside and inside MSF (Ministry of Health, potential academic and laboratory partners, and within MSF, field, coordination, and headquarters).
  • To prepare standard operational procedures.
  • To prepare and to supervise the field implementation (logistic preparation, recruitment of study teams).
  • To supervise the implementation of the study.
  • To ensure highest possible quality of results.
  • To ensure ethics principles and standardized operation procedures are respected at any time during the study.
  • To supervise and ensure quality of data entry.
  • To organise and coordinate quarterly study coordination meetings to feedback on interim results and discuss upcoming issues.
  • To do the data analysis and write first draft of the paper, and coordinate input from all.
  • To submit the final paper and follow-up until publication.

Requirements

Essential

  • University degree in public health epidemiology (MPH, MSc, or equivalent),
  • At least 2 years practical experience in epidemiology, with a focus on health problems of the
    developing world.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing at least one of the following
    studies: randomised trials, observational cohort, sample survey, prospective surveillance,
    outbreak investigation, quantitative impact evaluation.
  • Proficiency in basic statistical techniques, including sample size calculation, survey data
    analysis, diagnostic test evaluation, and regression.
  • Good knowledge of common statistical software (STATA, SPSS or equivalent).
  • Good communication skills.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Demonstrated ability in technical writing (reports or peer-reviewed publications).
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% of time.
  • Demonstrable commitment to humanitarian issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.

Preferred

  • Substantial experience of working in sub-Saharan Africa (2 years).
  • Proven experience in field research (as study co-ordinator or principal investigator).
  • Specific training/experience in at least one of the following field epidemiology techniques:
    feasibility studies, implementation research, multi-centre cohort studies.
  • Proficiency in advanced statistical techniques, including multivariate analysis of cohorts,
    survival data, and case-control studies.
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publication (at least one accepted article as first author).
  • Track record in HIV/AIDS research.
  • Knowledge of French or Portuguese.

Salary Detail are as Follows:

  • Basic Salary: R 20 000 (this is a Part-Time Post)
  • 10% additional pension allowance
  • 100% Medical Aid
  • Transport allowance

Commitment

  • Length of commitment: 1 year [Part-Time]

Note: Potential to enrol into a full PhD program supported by Wits University (South Africa) could evolve
from this project.
