JOB TITLE: Principal Investigation Officer

Grade: H
Section: Police Complaints Authority
Responsible To: Chief Investigation Officer
Number of Positions: One (1)


Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Chief Investigation Officer, the incumbent will investigate complaints from aggrieved persons against police officers from the rank of Senior Inspector to Superintendent. The incumbent is also responsible for the district complaints system and reports to the Chief Investigation Officer.


Main Duties

1. Investigates All Cases Involving Police Officers from the Level of Senior Inspector to Superintendent

1.1 Facilitates the opening of dockets for proper record of reported cases
1.2 Keeps material exhibits for presentation in the Courts of Law
1.3 Obtains statements in order to keep a record of witnesses’ account of events
1.4 Supervises searches, seizures and arrests to ensure compliance with the law

2. Responsible for District Complaints System

2.1 Receives public complaints at district level and allocates work to Senior Investigation Officers
2.2 Supervises Senior Investigation Officers in the districts for accountability
2.3 Monitors performance of Senior Investigation Officers for performance management
2.4 Conducts on-the-job training for Senior Investigation Officers, Principal Investigation Officers and Investigation Officers for efficiency and effectiveness
2.5 Assists Senior Investigation Officers with complicated cases to enhance professionalism

3. Reports to Chief Investigation Officer

3.1 Submits performance appraisal reports of Senior Investigation Officers to Chief Investigation Officer
3.2 Compiles and transmits district material needs for budgetary purposes to Chief Investigation Officer
3.3 Advises Chief Investigation Officer on district training needs for Human Resources Development purposes
3.4 Submits to Chief Investigation Officer the district investigative progress and complaints trend reports for accountability


Job Specification

  • Master’s Degree in Social Sciences or LLM plus two (2) years’ experience in the field of investigations or research
    OR
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences or LLB plus four (4) years’ experience in the field of investigations or research
