Post-Harvest Losses Survey – Statistician   

WFP supports the Government of Lesotho to implement a climate adaptation project in the districts of Mafeteng, Mohale’s Hoek and Quthing districts. Through this project, WFP will work with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and other partners and actors to undertake the post-harvest losses study to assess existing harvest and post-harvest technologies being used by smallholder farmers and retailers, identify appropriate, cost effective and climate resilient harvest and post-harvest technologies for smallholder farmers and large retailers. The study is also expected to recommend cost effective and climate smart harvest and post-harvest technologies. The study will be undertaken in districts of Mokhotlong, Leribe, Maseru, Mafeteng and Quthing to represent highlands, northern lowlands, foothills, southern lowlands, Senqu river valley and lowlands livelihood zones.

To this far, an inception report has been finalized as well as data collection tools that are to be used for data collection that is to start as soon as the engagement of Enumerators has been finalized. Data collection tools need to be programmed in the electronic data collection devices that M&E unit will avail for the study. Also, an online database/platform into which all the collected data will be deposited while preparation for analysis is being done needs to be set up too.

The role of the Statistician will be needed for a total of 13 days as broken down below. This cuts across from data collection through the report writing stage.

Under the supervision of the PHL Consultants, the Statistician will programme data collection tools, prepare the online database, participate in the training of Enumerators and work on data analysis to facilitate report writing.   

Tasks and Responsibilities:

The Statistician will be expected to achieve the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Review of questionnaire (questioning, data types and measurement scales synchronisation) = 1 day
  • Set Up online data applications to be used for data collection through an electronic device (ODK/KOBO online templates) = 2days
  • Train Enumerators on ODK/KOBO data collection tools = 2 days
  • Supervise data collection by supporting data upload = 2 day (workday in terms of hours/time required)
  • Clean collected/uploaded data in preparation for data analysis for report writing = 1 day
  • Analyse data and support report writing = 5 days

 Required Qualifications:

Education and competencies

  • Bachelors’ or Masters’ Degree in Statistics and or Monitoring and Evaluation.
  • Data Management processes: sample design, questionnaire design, data entry template design, data cleaning, analysis, presentation of results, training of all processes
  • Extensive computer programming and data analysis including development of databases and experience in digital software
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
