JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of SACP CID the incumbent is responsible to perform “medico- legal Autopsies.” That is, he/she performs autopsies, experimental manipulations and other research calculated to determine cause and manner of death and other legally relevant information from the bodies of persons who died under suspicious or potentially criminal circumstances; reports on the findings and gives evidence before the courts of law.
MAIN DUTIES
1. Performs autopsies on bodies of persons who died in potentially criminal circumstances to determine the cause of death.
2. Performs duties assigned to him/her countrywide where the autopsy examination and/or an exhumation must be performed at the scene of crime and not at the place assigned for performance of such business.
3. Conducts experimental manipulations, examinations and or other research to determine legally relevant information from bodies of persons suspected to have been violated or otherwise abused in order to secure evidence.
4. Prepares a written report for submission to the investigation officers detailing the findings of autopsies and or any other relevant experimental manipulations for inclusion in the investigative docket.
5. Provides evidence in courts of law on his/her findings following performance of autopsy, examination and or any experimental manipulation conducted under 1, 2 or 3 above in order to enable the courts of law to administer justice.
6. Maintains proper and legible registers of main tasks he/she undertakes in 1 to 4 above for accountability and record purposes.
OTHER ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. The incumbent must be registered with the Medical Council of Lesotho.
2. He/she shall be bound by medical ethics to keep confidentiality at all times.
3. The incumbent must satisfy the legal standards expected from the practitioner of Forensic Pathology in Lesotho.
4. The incumbent must have no criminal record.
5. He/she must be prepared to work extensively even in remote areas.
6. He/she must be able to absorb pressure and be ready to work in awkward hours.
JOB SPECIFICATION: Education and Training
• Doctor of Medicine (MBCHB/MBBS) with a Post-graduate in Pathology plus five (5) years’ experience specializing in Forensic Pathology OR 5 years’ experience in Clinical Medicine plus an exposure in dealing with Criminal Cases including Autopsy Examination.
