Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following position tenable in the Ministry of Health.
POSITION: Paramedic
Grade: G
Number of Positions: Ten (10)
Responsible To: Medical Superintendent
Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Medical Superintendent, the Paramedic will work in ambulance and rapid response units to deal with medical emergencies. Such emergencies may include minor injuries, sudden illnesses, and casualties arising from accidents, criminal violence, fires, and other incidents.
Paramedics are usually the first senior healthcare professionals on the scene. They assess the patient’s condition and initiate specialist medical treatment before the patient’s admission to hospital care.
Main Duties
- Respond to medical emergency calls 24 hours a day, providing assistance at accidents, incidents, and other emergencies—usually with an ambulance technician.
- Assess the condition of patients who are injured or suddenly taken ill and decide on the necessary treatment actions.
- Apply dressings to wounds, splints to limbs, and administer oxygen, intravenous drips, and pain relief.
- Use various types of medical equipment, including defibrillators and ventilators, to assist breathing, resuscitate patients, and stabilize cardiac conditions.
- Carry out certain surgical procedures when necessary, such as the insertion of breathing tubes (intubation).
- Monitor the patient’s condition using high-tech medical equipment.
- Assess how and whether patients should be moved safely.
- Liaise with other emergency services, such as police officers and the fire brigade.
- Communicate effectively with family members and members of the public present at the emergency scene.
- Treat patients in the ambulance while being transferred to the hospital or between healthcare facilities, ensuring continuity of specialist care.
- Drive or crew an ambulance or rapid response vehicle as required.
- Clean, check, and decontaminate vehicles and equipment to maintain operational readiness.
- Assist in providing care to patients in hospitals or other healthcare centers when needed.
- Write up case notes, patient histories, and treatment details for reporting to relevant hospital staff.
- Assist in the management and delivery of emergency medical services.
Job Specification
Minimum Qualification and Experience:
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Emergency Medical Care and Rescue,
OR - Diploma in Emergency Medical Care and Rescue plus four (4) years of relevant hospital or clinical training experience.
Registration:
- Must be registered with the Lesotho Medical, Dental, and Pharmacy Council.
