About BRICS Feminist Watch (BFW)  

BRICS Feminist Watch (BFW) is an alliance of feminists from emerging economies that brings the collective strength of feminist analysis and activism to promote gender responsive and inclusive economic development. BFW members work towards advancing gender equality in sustainable development and make visible the linkages between gender justice, environmental justice, and economic justice including through addressing gender issues in all international financial institutions. BRICS Feminist Watch members have conducted research on gender and women’s rights within IFIs including the World Bank, IMF, and regional and national development banks. BFW has been engaged in discussions with the BRICS New Development Bank, whose focus is on renewable energy and infrastructure, to develop a gender policy, enhance transparency, accountability, social responsibility and diversity in Bank’s polices and all stages of operations.

The Role  

BRICS Feminist Watch Coordinator will be charged with implementing the day to day operations of the BFW secretariat based in Cape Town, South Africa.  The main function of the BFW Secretariat will be to provide support to the BFW Core Group (the governance body of the BFW) and the BFW membership.  The initial staffing of the BWF secretariat will be comprised of the OZA Global Impact (GI) Manager and the BFW Coordinator.  The BFW Coordinator will report to the OZA GI Manager and work closely with OZA operational teams for support in finance/grants management, human resources, logistics and communications.   Both the BFW Coordinator and OZA GI Manager will receive guidance and direction from the BFW Core Group on coordinating the BFW secretariat operations and activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Management:  Lead on the execution of BFW project plans, including the coordination of BWF strategic planning processes and implementation of BFW strategy; coordinate events (including virtual activities such as webinars); provide administrative and logistical support including travel arrangements for BFW Core Group and network members; manage consultancies; assist with managing partnership relations; and other duties as required.
  • Network Coordination:  Organise monthly (or as needed) core group telecons, including the development of meeting agendas, minutes and follow up on key actions and decisions;
  • Communications and Media:  Manage BFW listserve communications, BFW website and social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook or other), in coordination with BFW secretariat support staff, and BFW Core Group Members (include core group?).
  • Multi-stakeholder relations:  Support the BFW core group to manage BFW multi-stakeholder relations including with BFW member and prospective members, feminist and women’s rights organisations, other civil society organisations, think-tanks/academic institutions; media; and, IFI, UN and government officials. This includes membership recruitment and engaging with members to participate in BFW activities.
  • Administration, Financial and Grants Management:  Manage day to day related administrative and financial tasks, including the developing of annual plans and budgets (in consultation with the BFW Core Group), disbursement of project funds budgets, and related narrative and budget reporting on the status of project implementation (both internal and external as needed).
  • Fundraising:  Develop a fundraising plan and identify potential donors (in collaboration with the OZA GI Manager and BFW Core members), write donor reports and assist with the development of funding proposals and concept notes
  • OZA project management:  Provide 25% of time to OZA for similar tasks related to project management, communications, and administrative, financial and grants management for the Global Impact Programme.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of working on advocacy programmes and initiatives in the Global South (including BRICS).
  • Proven experience and track record of managing civil society networks, with strong knowledge of feminist organisations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to women’s human rights and gender equality issues with experience in carrying out feminist and gender analysis
  • Good knowledge of and experience with managing donor funded projects with experience in financial management, project budgeting, and budget monitoring.
  • Excellent personal communication skills (in written and verbal English) and communications background in managing content for social media and website.
  • Strong organisational and interpersonal skills with the ability to prioritise work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

  • Academic qualifications: minimum undergraduate degree preferably in development, gender, human rights and economics.
  • Minimum 3-years work experience working in the NGO sector.
  • Experience in human rights, gender studies and/or sustainable development.
