Operator : Side arm charger ( P14 )

Sappi Saiccor – Rail Department requires Operators to safely shunt loaded rail vehicles as per mill requirements and procedures by operating the side arm charger to provide raw materials to the plant within required turnaround times.

The role reports to the Manager Rail Transport

The main responsibilities are :

  • Couple the machine to the timber wagons by means of the side arm charger and operate the automated side arm charger as per set work procedures from the workstation
  • Control the smooth running of the machine and adequately maintain set turnaround times
  • Place rail vehicles correctly within clearance markers in the demarcated area and apply the appropriate brake system preventing the run away of rail vehicles
  • Coordinate the indexing of the timber wagons with the log offloading crane driver
  • Complete a visual inspection prior to any movement ensuring there are no obstructions or persons on the rail or side arm charger railway lines
  • Diagnose equipment failures as soon as identified and escalate to minimise machine downtime.
  • Complete a shift handover before and at the end of each shift creating awareness between each shift of problems experienced during the shift
  • Supervise personnel assigned to assist with general housekeeping and monitor standard of work completed
  • Sign and complete the fit for duty declaration as per Rail Safety Regulator standards and Rail Transport procedures at the beginning of each shift to declare fitness for work
  • Adhere to the two-way radio procedure when shunting or operating the side arm charger to ensure effective communication takes place between all parties working on the rail
  • Perform any other work of lower and similar complexity as required rail manager safely
  • Comply with all safety, health, quality and environmental standards and procedures while shunting and maintain high ;evels of safety and housekeeping in the plant
  • Complete visual inspections throughout the shift to ensure the line is clear of any obstacles, obstruction’s or people
  • Advise the Wood yard personnel of any abnormalities identified while shunting
  • Visually inspect safety and first aid equipment on a regular basis to ensure equipment is kept in good condition.

The ideal candidate should have :

  • An NQF level 4 qualification with Mathematics and Science
  • 3-4 years relevant experience in a manufacturing industry.
  • Shunting experience will be considered an advantage.
