Operator Field: Pulp ( P14 )
Sappi Southern Africa requires an Operator Field: Pulp to ensure production and quality system throughout the pulping process is well maintained to conformed standard and in compliance with SHEQ by providing cover for the production pulp section and the technical team (i.e. laboratory) so that optimum production rate is maintained on a continuous basis and downtime is minimised
The main responsibilities of this job are:
- Works closely with the pulp mill or Copeland operator to make sure the pulp quality conforms to standard and Copeland is working adequately
- Inspects section and checks production work in progress and pulp quality on shift takeover in all sections they are working in
- Responsible for sampling bagasse, pulp and chemicals as per the test schedules in the pulp and bagasse sections. Carries out additional sampling as requested by the foreman/supt.
- Responsible for routine field checks of equipment and work in progress e.g. Faulty/rowdy equipment, leaks, chests overflowing, washing efficiencies and pulp quality
- Reports on test results related to sampling, inspection and testing in accordance to works instructions and test methods.
- Checks test results conform to specifications after analysis
- Provides prompt feedback to production areas in cases of product non-conformance and conduct immediate resampling and retesting.
- Performs visual quality checks on raw materials and products during manufacture and processing of the manufactured material
- Attends shift base unit meetings and be actively involved in 5S implementation and reports to team leader on all quality-related matters
- Provides on the job training for all new employees by ensuring the correct methods and procedures are followed and provide personal demonstration of the tests to assist understanding.
- Contributes towards good working relations within the team and with other teams
- Performs any reasonable request related to work area or job performance by the Superintendent. Hands over shift to the oncoming shift by discussing all important quality matters related to process and product that should be maintained or monitored
- Assists pulp mill operators when necessary i.e. shuts, breakdowns and when optimizing process daily
- Helps in Copeland Area when required iro cleaning and monitoring of the chute
- Acts as shift Cover in the following areas: Pulp mill; Wet lap; Chemical Recovery; Chemical Preparation and Wet Depithing depending on competency in department.
- Adheres to environmental policy and procedures including
- Reduces wastes
- Prevents spills
- Meets environmental targets that apply to his sphere of influence
- Complies with hazardous chemical handling procedure
- Complies with environmental legal requirements
- Safety, health, environment & quality (SHEQ)
- Understands and comply with all SHEQ requirements of the job.
- Carries out BBS Observations
- Identifies and takes corrective action in terms of SHEQ conditions and hazards
- Maintains a high level of good housekeeping in the workplace at all times
The ideal candidate should have:
- Matric + Full N1 Pulp & Paper + 2 N2 subjects or NQF Level 4 Paper Board
- Six (6) months operational experience in a Manufacturing/Production Environment
