Position Title: Operations Manager (Durban Plant)

The main purpose of the job is to lead the operations based at the Durban Industrial Park. This includes assembly of Trucks in Final assembly as well as Customer adaptation. Be a positive and inspirational leader, develop and grow people and culture.

Reporting: This role will report to the Director Durban Plant

Job Objective

  • To ensure SQCDEP targets are achieved and in line with Plant and Customer adaptation objectives. The headcount in the dept. today consists of 110 staff, with a team structure of 10 Teams/Team leaders and two Production leaders.

  • Develop and support your direct reports and teams through a people oriented and supportive leadership

  • Secure effective competence development structure and connected investment in time

  • Secure an inclusive workplace that will serve as basis for high performance teams in line with the Volvo Values

  • Secure a Continuous improvement structure and culture, where problems are seen as opportunities to improve

  • To ensure that the Operations organization is well resourced, trained and equipped to deliver the desired level of output

  • To ensure that effective communication systems are in place across the organization

  • To enact and implement the organization medium to long term strategies.

  • To develop, build and maintain functional relationships with all key and relevant stakeholders within and outside the organization.

  • To be a strong ambassador for Health & Safety and Quality, manage risk aspects within the assembly/CA environment and take the necessary action to mitigate against any hazards

  • To ensure compliance to all legislative acts and pronouncements that are applicable within the assembly/CA environment.

  • To assume end to end ownership and accountability for all assembly and CA related aspects

  • To develop a functional and mutually beneficial relationship with organized labour / Union representatives.

  • Represent the factory & participate actively in the related International manufacturing networks

Education & Job Experience

  • Degree or Diploma in Operations/Production Management or Mechanical Engineering.

  • Must have 10 years working experience within an Automotive/Manufacturing Environment.

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years experience in Senior Leadership or Managerial roles within the automotive industry

Job Knowledge and Skills

  • Good knowledge & experience from a Production/ Automotive industry

  • Positive attitude, flexible and self-driven

  • Good communication and presentation skills

  • Good problem solving and deviation handling skills

  • Must be flexible and diligent

  • Experience in implementation of lean principles and process orientation

  • Experience in IR and HR Processes and good negotiation skills

  • Work experience in a unionized environment.

  • Strong Industrial/labor relations background

  • Having worked with/in diverse teams

  • Manage multiple priorities

  • Dealing with multiple stakeholders at different levels

  • Genuine business acumen interest & ability to cooperate with persons on different levels.

  • Team player with strong interpersonal & networking skills

  • Proven MS Office skills

  • Occasional domestic travel required
