Primary Purpose of Role: – The main role of the Operations Manager is to oversee the manufacturing process within a Wabtec and FIP Brakes South Africa and to ensure that production lines run without any problems and minimum downtime.

Primary Objectives:

Manage and support SHEQ initiatives and objectives.

  • Define, propose and implement the weekly, monthly, annual production schedule tied to MPS and SIOP
  • Conduct and lead the daily GEMBA meetings with SCM
  • Plan and manage production capacity for the OEM, Maintenance and C/S lines, allocate the resources that are required and ensure stock levels remain adequate.
  • Cost management of products and assist with new product costings models.
  • Analyse budgets and continuously control production costs and identify/rectify waste measures.
  • Efficient running of the plant manufacturing site on a rotational shift basis and tied to operational (Planned) maintenance requirements.
  • Implementation and control of standardized systems, methods and SOPs
  • Initiating and implementing productivity improvement projects always tied to TOT and maintaining EHS standards.
  • Work side by side with Quality Management and Supply Chain team to meet Operational targets.
  • Ensure, drive safety and housekeeping as a part of the production plan.
  • Maximize production outputs, efficiency, productivity and maintain good quality.
  • Analyse production results on a continuous basis with the aim to meet or better the goals on quality, quantity and productivity.
  • Ensure that works orders (job cards) for OEM, C/S and Maintenance are carried out.
  • Lead, coach and mentor subordinates when necessary.
  • Control Time/attendance of people.
  • Manage and lead Supervisors, Methods Engineers and Line leaders, provide feedback and guidance to achieve goals set out by the business.
  • Compile and evaluate the Key Performance Areas of the people reporting to you.
  • Ensure that goals on Production quality meet the ISO standards
  • Be the leader / champion in continuous improvement, as required.
  • Ensure that all administrative duties (control and check sheets) are completed as required and aligned with the QC team.
  • Manage MPS weekly and SIOP monthly reporting in line with SCM.
  • Plan and manage overtime and attendance and leave roster.
  • Manage skills development and skills metric for the employees.
  • Ensure customer orders are completed on time and to budget and that quality standards and targets are met
  • Manage WIP, stock of raw materials and reporting of shortages on the production lines
  • Create and implement organisational/production changes on an operative level.
  • Manage and plan plant capacity, NPI or high and low volume / cyclical production call offs.
  • Review worker performance and identify training needs.
  • The ability to act decisively and solve staff or equipment-related problems – motivate and structure CAPEX requirements to keep up with growing volumes / NPI or production improvements.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and persuasively with your team, managers and clients

Formal Education/Training/ work experience

Education:

  • Technical /Bachelor’s Degree (Production/Mechanical/Electrical/Industrial) Degree/Diploma in Operations Management – preferred.

Experience

Minimum 5 – 10 years of experience of working in senior production role, preferably in a production engineering, industrial manufacturing process-oriented organization

  • Experience in the production/ assembly management of high value mechanical, pneumatics, and electrical products / equipment
  • Experience of working closely with Quality Assurance & Quality Control and Health, safety & Environment, ISO grading / certification.
  • Experience and skills in personnel and asset safety
  • Effective communications
  • Well versed in using at least one of the Project Management Software: Microsoft Projects, Liquid Planner, Primavera
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate & control
  • Sound understanding of the technical aspect of product design
  • Ability to lead, motivate, coach, and teach others
  • Railway manufacturing experience (advantage but not preferred)
  • ORACLE experience would be advantage.

  • Able to apply principle of Continuous improvement
  • Sound knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (including ethical and disciplined behaviour, safety, etc.)
  • Willing to work overtime, weekends and public holidays as and when required.
  • The ability to work under pressure and multitask
  • Leadership skills and the ability to motivate others to meet deadlines
  • A results-driven approach to work
