Open Call: Warming: Architecture for a Changed World

83
Our world is changing. Imagine Miami Beach permanently underwater, hurricanes constantly clashing against Manhattan, devastating droughts in London, and heatwaves that render Barcelona unlivable.

A future like this currently occupies our imagination but inches closer to reality each day.

What does our world look like in this future? How do our lives change? How will our built environment and decisions as a society react to rising sea levels, extended droughts, climbing temperatures, and other symptoms of global warming? How can our buildings, processes, and lifestyles prevent the severity of natural disasters, degrading air quality, melting ice caps, and climate change at large?

WARMING calls on students and professionals from the fields of architecture, planning, and design; plus problem solvers from all backgrounds to help guide and imagine humanity’s pathway forward on Earth.

CHALLENGE

For the WARMING Competition participants are asked to propose new or adapted architecture that contains strategies for addressing issues of global warming. Participants are free to experiment and explore the matter – designs can be of any program, any scale, and on any site.

As architects, designers, and problem solvers, we can depict the future that we may soon face, along with humanity’s role in shaping it. Participants should illustrate their designs in a way that communicates the issues of global warming they are addressing and what strategy(ies) are being used to respond to those issues.

Participants may propose strategies that prevent the rise of global warming or strategies that react to the changing world we will inhabit. Participants may also take a combined approach.

PREVENT – designs and strategies can address issues such as renewable energy, recycling, sustainable farming, alternative transportation, or others.

REACT – designs and strategies can address issues such as sea level rise, droughts, wilderness fires, severe weather, habitat destruction, or others.
