One Health: Connecting People, Animals, and the Environment

Animals are dying in a village. Children are sick from the same contaminated water. The veterinary worker documents one problem. The nurse documents the other. They have never met. This free course helps health, veterinary, agricultural, and environmental workers understand why their systems stay separate and what they can do to connect them. The Geneva Learning Foundation draws on experiences from health and humanitarian workers in over 60 countries.

Who is this for?

This course is for health workers, veterinary officers, environmental health staff, and agricultural extension workers who see connections between human health, animal health, and the environment in their daily work but have no shared framework or system for acting on those connections. If you have watched a disease move from animals to people in your area without any coordinated response, this course is for you. All professional levels are welcome.

What you will learn and do

• Three colleagues from other countries review your cross-sector action plan and tell you what they would change. You review three of theirs, each working in a different setting where animals, people, and the environment intersect.
• Describe a situation from your own work where human health, animal health, and the environment were connected and no one coordinated the response.
• Health systems work in silos. Identify two programs in your area that serve the same community but have never met across a table.
• Analyze what keeps those programs apart and what breaks when one loses its funding.
• Develop a concrete plan to connect your work with another sector in the next three months, using only resources you already have.

How the course works

Short text-based readings. No video. No heavy downloads. Works on any phone. Each activity asks you to analyze your own setting and plan your own action. You share your cross-sector action plan with three colleagues from other countries, who review it and suggest improvements. You review three of theirs. The course draws on academic research, global guidelines, and the lived experiences of thousands of health and humanitarian workers. This primer is part of The Geneva Learning Foundation’s Certificate peer learning programme for leadership in climate change and health.

Your certificate

You will earn a certificate from The Geneva Learning Foundation. The certificate documents the work you produced, your situation analysis and your cross-sector action plan.
