JOB DESCRIPTION: Assist in the control of occupational hygiene function in accordance with PDSA’s policies and statutory
requirements.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Implement the Mine’s Occupational Hygiene and Ventilation programme to mitigate impacts and ensure legal compliance
Assist in establishing and managing occupational health programmes
Compilation and proper management of the occupational hygiene and ventilation budget which must be in line with the annual
budget guidelines
Compile mandatory reports for the DMR and Chamber of Mines
Compile sampling schedules according to legal requirements
Compile work load schedule according to legal requirements
Conduct research into occupational hygiene and ventilation matters to inform and improve processes
Continuously evaluate the effectiveness, suitability and adequacy of the occupational hygiene and ventilation programme
Participate in the auditing of the Occupational Hygiene and Ventilation Management System according to Group practices and
standards
Develop and implement effective communication, training and awareness programmes in relation to health risks
Drive the Mine emergency preparedness programme which includes legal compliance of the Emergency Control Room,
participation in the selection of appropriate underground and surface fire management
Management of the surface fire team, surface fire team training and surface fire team equipment
Ensure the maintenance of the occupational hygiene and ventilation document management system and associated records
Ensure the monitoring and assessment of compliance to the occupational hygiene and ventilation programme
Establish and manage a programme for workplace occupational hygiene and ventilation inspections and investigations
Establish point sampling programmes, evaluate results and write reports
Establish programmes for water sample collection, fall out dust and biological monitoring, evaluate programmes, enforce
standards pertaining to these programmes and write reports to meet set deadlines
Evaluate occupational hygiene and ventilation inspection results, recommend mitigation controls and compile reports
Handle operational occupational hygiene and ventilation complaints and ensure close out of complaints
Investigate occupational diseases and report on occupational diseases
Maintain the link between occupational health and occupational hygiene with regards to medical surveillance
Participate in developing, establishing and enforcing relevant Codes of Practice, standards, procedures, procedures pertaining
to fire team management, Issue Based Risk Assessments and managing instructions
Responsible for conducting troubleshooting in terms of occupational hygiene and ventilation matters
Responsible for contract management
Responsible for establishing and managing a programme for the control of occupational hygiene and ventilation instruments
Responsible for influencing procurement
Responsible for the planning of ventilation requirements – short and long term
Proper and accurate management of staff time and attendance according to Company Policies and Procedures
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Certificate COM Mine Environmental Control Advanced (full qualification 6 subjects) OR equivalent tertiary qualification
Grade 12 with Maths and Science
At least 5 years Occupational Hygiene experience in a mine ventilation and hygiene environment of which 2 years have been
at supervisory/managerial level
Valid Drivers’ License
Member of South African Institute of Occupational Hygiene
Member of Mine Ventilation Society
Supervisory Development Programme (SDP) – or equivalent
OHSAS 18001 / ISO45001
Computer Literacy and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
