Job Summary:
Responsibilities include organisation, co-ordination and implementation of nursing care activities in a ward/unit. The incumbent is also responsible for special nursing services and supervision of staff under her.

Job requirements:

Planning and organizing nursing services within a ward or unit:
Participates and prepares in formulation of the Philosophy, objectives for the nursing department in accordance with those of the hospital.
Responsible for delegation of duties to nursing personnel working under her at various levels.
Draws up daily/monthly work schedule for nurses and non-nursing personnel in order to ensure the night mix of staff at any time in accordance with the duty roster.
Provides orientation to all newly employed staff on policies, protocols, and guidelines for proper taking of work in the ward/unit.
Identifies training needs for improvement of nursing care.
Plans and puts into effect in- service education programmes to update staff on new approaches in nursing.
Participates in clinical teaching of nursing students in order to correlate theory with practice.
Organises for taking of specimens to the laboratory and collection of results for review and maintenance of patients’ management.

Co-ordination of nursing services with other health services:
Works with Pharmacy department to ensure availability of drugs and supplies at all times for sustainability of patients’ treatment and management.
Inspects patient’s chart daily to determine inclusion of necessary documentation for communication with other health services about the patient’s progress.
Liaises with patient’s relatives and other relevant agencies/departments to assist patients in the process of recovery.

Supervision:
Supervises implementation of the nursing process for effectiveness of the nursing actions.
Consults with medical officer on the implementation of medical prescriptions for the wellness of the patients as medical consumers.

Nursing Services Administration:
Responsible for adequate and qualitative nursing care of the patients receiving treatment in the indoor or the out-door.
Investigates complaints, prepares reports and takes disciplinary action or recommends the same.
Prepares proposals for special equipment required for nursing services, giving specification and participates in purchase committee meeting as a member.
Prepares budget for her nursing unit and submits to CDNS.
Holding departmental meetings allowing free exchange of ideas and reviewing ward staffing.
Maintain individual cumulative records of all nursing staff.
Writing reports- confidential reports of nursing staff, annual report of the nursing department depleting achievements, future plans of expansion- any other reports that maybe required for submission.
Analyses daily reports/census on the hospital situation, e.g. admission, discharge etc. in order to replace nursing manpower or submit reports to higher authority.
Takes active interest in staff development programme.
Provides guidance and counselling to the subordinate staff.
Serve on several hospital committees as shall be assigned.

Provision of special nursing services:
Nursing officer is expected do either of the following depending on the speciality she/he has.


●Midwifery Services (Midwife):
Develops protocols for Midwifery quality practice.
Performs ANC and PNC for management of women in their childbearing age.
Keeps inventory for proper management of clients.
Conducts immunizations for the neonate in order to assist them to cope with initial stressors of life.
Attends to the needs of neonate for its well-being.


●A Registered Midwife should be able to perform the following lifesaving skills:
Resuscitation of the new-born.
Manipulation of baby shoulder girdle dystocia.
Management of Post-Partum Haemorrhage.
Compression of abdominal aorta in care of haemorrhage.
Manual removal compression of the placenta.
Repairing of high vaginal tears.
Bimanual compression of the uterus.
She/he will undertake research or investigates on problem affecting both the health of the mother and the baby.


●Public Health Services (Public Community Health Nurse):
Liaises with medical officers, SNO, and other health professionals to ensure efficient delivery of nursing care and community health nursing services.
Maintains regular follow up visits for the chronically ill patients for continuity of care.
Conducts immunizations to childhood immunisable diseases.
Investigates diseases outbreaks in the communities and implements nursing actions to reduce the spread of diseases.
Evaluates the impact of program related activities for the effectiveness of the intervention in question.
Evaluates effectiveness of existing physical environment in the community and health centres for recommendation, changes, improvements and adjustment where necessary.


●Tasks
Administration and Management of Medications
She/he will order medications and supplies form the pharmacy.
She/he will ensure that all stored medications are accessible only to clinical staff in the unit.
She will countersign orders made by junior staff e.g. Registered Nurses, Nursing Assistants and students.
She/he will be accountable for habit-forming medications and other medication in the unit.
Ensures five rights of administering medications.
She/he will instil eye medications in the new-borns as a prophylactic measure against eye infections.
She/he will put up an I.V. line and administer I.V. medications for emergencies.
She/he may prescribe and administer medication in an emergency according to the instructional policy.
She will be responsible for handling the medication cupboard keys.
She/he will monitor the effects of medications on the patients and reports to the Dr.
She/he will make the pharmacist aware of about to expire medications to exchange them.


●Unit Stock Control:
Maintains an inventory of equipment and linen in the unit and gives the report to the CDNS.
Determines unit requirements together with the CDNS.
For equipment that needs repair, she/he be assigned to take it to the maintenance department for repair.
For damaged equipment, she/he should report to CDNS or directly to the MHNS in the absence of CDNS.
Ensures economic usage of utilities without compromising the life of patient.


●A registered nursing degree is required for this position, which is attained by earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing or graduating from an accredited and approved nursing program or possess a Postgraduate Diploma in Special Nursing Services e.g. Community Health, Nursing Administration, Anaesthesiology, Oncology Nursing etc.
A person in this position typically has at least five years of experience in the nursing field.
Must be registered with Lesotho Nursing Council as a Nurse and updated his/her annual subscription.
Should be affiliated with a professional association relevant for Nurses.
