JOB TITLE               :           NURSING OFFICER

RESPONSIBLE TO :          SENIOR NURSING OFFICER

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of Senior Nursing Officer, the incumbent is responsible for  patient/client nursing care, organization, co-ordination and supervision of staff under her/him in a ward/unit. Over and above these responsibilities a Nursing Officer carries out specialized nursing services.

MAIN DUTIES

 Patient /Client nursing care

  • Reviews planned nursing care plan for appropriateness
  • Monitors and evaluates planned care and process of recovery for re-planning and continuity of care.
  • Provides counseling services to both clients and their relatives to cope with the situation.
  • Provides planned nursing care actions to clients /patients for their recovery.
  • Monitors and evaluates clients process of recovery for re-planning and continuity of nursing care
  • Refers complicated patients and clients to SNO for further nursing management and support.
  • Counsels patients and their families and staff in cases of bereavement in order to assist them to cope with their loss.

 Organizations of nursing services within a ward /unit

  • Draws up daily/monthly work schedule for nurses and non-nursing personnel in order to ensure the right mix of staff at any time in accordance with the duty roster.
  • Identifies training needs for improvement of nursing care.
  • Provides orientation to all newly employed staff on policies, protocols, and /or guidelines for proper taking off of work in the ward.
  • Plans and puts into effect in –service education programs to update staff on new approaches in nursing.
  • Participates in clinical teaching of nursing students in order to correlate theory with practice.
  • Organizes for taking of specimens to the laboratory and collection of results for review and maintenance of patient‘s management.

 Co-ordination of nursing services with other health services

  •  Works with Pharmacy department to ensure availability of drugs and supplies at all times for sustainability of patients treatment and management.
  • Inspects patients charts daily to determine inclusion of necessary documentation for communication with other health services about the patients progress.
  • Liaises with patients’ relatives and other relevant agencies/departments to assist patients in the process of recovery.

 Supervision

  • Supervises the nursing sisters in the implementation of the nursing process for support and motivation.
  • Assesses cleanliness of the wards for prevention of hospital based infection
  • Appraises  nursing sisters for appropriate interventions in the care of patients/clients
  • Consults with medical officers on the implementation of medical prescriptions for appropriate management of patients.

Midwifery services (Midwife)

  • Develops protocols for midwifery quality services.
  • Performs ANC, INC, and PNC for management of women in their child bearing age.
  • Keeps inventory for proper management of clients.
  • Conducts immunizations for the neonate in order to assist them cope with initial stressors of life.
  • Attends to the needs of a neonate for its well-being.

JOB SPECIFICATION 

Degree in General nursing and Midwifery (Generic) plus two (2) years working experience in the public sector

OR                                            

Diploma in General Nursing and midwifery plus two (2) years working experience in the public sector.
