Nursing Assistant ( P12 )

Sappi Southern Africa requires a Nursing Assistant to assist with the maintenance of a healthy workforce, to establish support functions that aim to improve employee safety and productivity, and to implement systems that ensure compliance with relevant legislation

This role reports in to the Occupational Health Nurse

The main responsibilities of this role are:

  • Schedule medical examinations, take patient history prior to medical examination and conduct basic observations including blood pressure, pulse, weight, urine and height to assist in completion of medical examinations
  • Conduct Audiometry, vision and lung function testing and ensure calibration of spirometer and audiometer (after certification and training) for legal compliance
  • Educate and train employees in accordance with the health and safety risks to which they may be exposed, and the inherent requirements of the positions to which they are assigned according to the Occupational Risk Exposure Profile (OREP)
  • Monitor and assist with substance use and abuse identification, follow up, treatment, referral for rehabilitation and liaise with Employee Well-Being (EWB) regarding case management
  • Accurate record keeping and reporting of consultations in medical records through electronic data management for legal and statistical requirements in accordance confidentiality clause
  • Educate and manage primary health care, chronic and acute treatment regarding the correct intake of their medication, diet, partner disclosure and holistic health management
  • Assist with appointments and referrals to external service providers as per standard operating procedures
  • Check team and vehicle First Aid boxes; replenish missing stock, compile and up-keep of First Aid register as per legal requirements
  • Provide primary emergency care with assessment and referral to the appropriate service if required
  • Monthly checks of emergency clinic equipment, stock, and oxygen supply according to site requirements
  • Participate in relevant committee structures. e.g. Health and Safety, EWB peer educators and visit departments/sections to discuss health-related issues.
  • Conduct plant visits and inspections to ensure cleanliness and to identify certain basic health risks
  • Run campaigns, programmes of work-related issues such as ergonomics, shift work, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), reproductive health issues

The ideal candidate should have:

  • General Nursing Assistant qualification/ Basic Ambulance Assistant
  • Certificate in Audiometry and Spirometry
  • Registration with South African Nursing council or the Health Professionals council
  • First aid level 1
  • Health Care initiated Testing (HCT) certificate
  • 1 Year experience in a clinical environment or similar
