New Product Development Lead, HouseholdWant to challenge yourself at a high-growth startup AND make a difference in the world?

A bit about us:

Hi, we’re Who Gives A Crap! We make eco-friendly toilet paper (as well as tissues and paper towels) and donate 50% of our profits to help build toilets for the 2 billion people in need.

We love doing good, and we happen to be exceptionally good at it too! To date, we’ve donated over AUD$8.3 million (roughly USD$5.9 million) to fund sanitation projects around the globe. We’ve grown quickly selling directly to customers across three continents and have established a strong B2B business in Australia that’s expanding to the UK and US.

Our team is made up of over 100 amazing humans working out of Melbourne, Los Angeles, China, and Manila. We’re working hard to reach our ambitious goals and diversify our product range to ensure we can have the greatest impact possible both for the planet and its people. With your help, we’re hoping to increase our annual donation 10-fold in the next couple of years and continue to make the most beautiful, eco-friendly goods around.

A bit about the role:

As the newest roll (woop, wordplay!) in our New Product Development team, we are actively looking for an innovative Product Development Lead (Household) that will support the end-to-end new product development for areas in the home. Reporting directly into our Head of Innovation and working elbow-to-elbow with your New Product Development teammates, you’ll be leaning into your expertise in the product development process and vendor network to create and ship a suite of cleaning supplies and tools for multiple areas of the home that deliver with delight.

Collaboration and process will be the secret to your success as you partner up with our Supply Chain, Production, and Logistics teams, as well as external partners, to support these new products and new categories in our Australian, UK, and US markets, as well as explore new markets to launch into. You’ll be managing the vendor scoping from a product efficacy standpoint, thinking holistically about the user needs end-to-end, and leaning into your market research insights to explore this exciting new territory for us. As a champion for continuous improvement, you’ll also be working with our NPD Project Manager to refine our development process into scalable solutions across the household product development spectrum. And you’ll embrace feedback channels, leverage insights and learnings to inform your product strategy and roadmap, pipeline, and vision.

In addition to leading the charge of our household roadmap, you and the New Product Development team will grow the efficacy, impact, and differentiation of all Who Gives A Crap Products and proactively identity and tackle head-on opportunities to improve the way we do business. You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to seek those opportunities to expand our brand and range. Because doing good is important to you too, you champion external partnerships and sustainability improvements that genuinely improve our impact on the environment and help our customers improve their impact as well.

While we’re hiring this role for our Los Angeles hub, we still want to hear from you if you’re up for dedicating yourself to the PST timezone from afar.

If you worked here this past month here are some things you might have been involved in:

  • Led a brainstorm to see how we could deliver game-changing innovation in the home space and collaborated with the creative team to develop the strategy for this product area
  • Shared your insights with our Planning Team and leadership on the evolving product landscape that identifies the biggest white spaces for development
  • Worked alongside our Sourcing & Development Manager to vet contract manufacturers for our upcoming product launch to fulfill our brief with plastic-free packaging
  • Coordinated with logistics to ensure products for an upcoming launch are delivered on time to the right warehouses
  • Participated enthusiastically in a hilarious matching game of thrones aptly called Whose Loo Is It Anyways for our co-founder and Chief of Product & Purpose’s birthday
  • Partnered with our supply chain and executive teams to develop a more clear stage gate process for new product development
  • Fed back on an ingredient deck from a formulation partner, researching every ingredient to make sure we’re only creating clean, green products
  • Created and shared your product roadmap with key stakeholders to get their feedback and ensure everyone is working toward the same long-term goals
  • Prepared a summary of market data and customer insights to help us decide whether to pursue pet products or baby products as a next category
  • Partnered with our insights team to test a few new ideas with customers, quickly
  • Created a fragrance sampling process to allow our team across 2 countries to test and feedback on a range of fragrances for an upcoming product launch
  • Began planning next quarter’s OKRs to keep yourself aligned with your team, holding yourself accountable with cross-functional projects in all the ways that ladder up to company-wide goals

Who you are:

You know how to bring amazing products to life

You drive multiple products and product lines from inception through to successful customer uptake. You love to translate the product roadmap into products, and to translate those products into meaningful business improvement. You’ve got a track record of shipping quality products in the household CPG space, and you aren’t afraid to humble brag about it.

You care deeply about our customers

You care deeply about delivering delightful products that make our customers smile and feel good. You listen to customer feedback and internal partners to continually improve our products in ways that everyone wins.

You’re big on relationships and keen on quality

Whether it’s building a new relationship from scratch or nurturing an existing one, you’re a people person and you naturally establish strong partnerships near and far. You’re curious and passionate about the sourcing process and you’re motivated by the opportunity to push the envelope to improve how we do business, the products we deliver and the impact we make (wait, should we make envelopes?). You come with a portfolio of vendor relationships that align with our impact and sustainability values and ensure that everything we make feels good, looks good and does good, for the planet and for our business

You’re brand-obsessed with the CPG space, and know the difference between good, great, and excellent

You <3 brands that are doing it right, and are right there with the best of them. Just as important to you is the efficacy, impact, differentiation, and quality of brands, process, and products that are just a delightful as they are game-changing. You’re keeping a pulse on brands that are making a splash whilst constantly championing environmental improvements that genuinely improve our impact on the environment and help our customers improve their impact as well

You give a crap

Yep. We’re all here because we genuinely want to make the world a better place with our work, and we want you to want that too! Awwww.

Why you should work with us

Every minute you spend working with us, you’re making a difference. The more we grow, the bigger an impact we’ll have. Sell your soul no longer! We think that’s a pretty great perk, but we don’t stop there

If you have a great idea, we’ll do everything we can to make it happen. This is the kind of role that will be hard to find anywhere else: you’ll work with an incredible bunch of passionate people to grow a fast-paced startup at a crucial point in its trajectory.

The job is also amazingly flexible, something we’re working hard to hold onto even as we grow super quickly. We started the business remotely, and now have hubs in 4 cities around the world. While the Melbourne and LA teams spend a few days of the week together in our coworking spaces (when COVID allows of course!), you can also mix it up and work in your PJs from home or set up office at the beach hut, up to you! And while we don’t have a Friday drinks cart (yet), you will get free toilet paper. A lot of it. And nothing beats that.

Lastly, you get to say the word crap’ more than in any other job. Guaranteed.

Salary

This depends on your experience but just because we’re a social enterprise doesn’t mean you’ll get paid peanuts. Think chocolate covered macadamia nuts with some extra perks thrown in. In other words, we pay competitively and are determined to make this the best job you’ll ever have you won’t ever want to leave!

On top of the normal perks like annual leave, we also provide flexibility to take extra unpaid leave or travel while working, we provide a health insurance stipend, generous parental leave, training and development budget and a whole lot of other stuff. And did we mention the free toilet paper?

We’re also not the only ones who think that working at Who Gives A Crap is pretty unbeatable. We feel so honoured to have been recognized for the second year in a row on BuiltIn LA’s 100 Best Places to Work list, and most recently also on the Best Mid-sized Places to Work list. This selection was based on the value of our culture programs, company perks, benefits, and salary packages, and we’re listed alongside other notable names in the startup, bcorp, tech, and e-comm space. We don’t toot our horns often, so this is an extra bashful share. Check out some of our other US-based jobs featured on BuiltIn LA, and spread the word to other talented folks in your network who might be the perfect fit!

We recently landed in Culture Amp’s Top 10% Employee Engagement survey. And we’ve been a certified B Corp as of 2017, which means we’re committed (and demonstrating!) the highest standards of social and environmental impact as a profit-for-purpose business.
