RESPONSIBLE TO: Senior ICT Support Officer

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To contribute towards the availability of the LAN/WAN infrastructure, service and client workstation platforms, and application network service infrastructure for IFMIS.

MAIN DUTIES

1.0 Network Administration & Operations Management

1.1 Oversees and supports different types of networks: LAN, WAN, MAN, Virtual Private Networks, Intranets, and Extranets.
1.2 Supervises server installation and management; troubleshoots server problems.
1.3 Maintains the network server environment by implementing physical security measures and appropriate environmental controls (e.g., temperature regulation).
1.4 Creates and manages network groups, links workgroups to other networks, and ensures seamless communication.
1.5 Plans for network server fault tolerance (RAID, hot swap, warm swap, spare swaps, clustering, replication, mirroring, backups, restore tests, hot and cold sites).
1.6 Manages disk storage systems (basic & dynamic storage); implements distributed file systems and optimizes disk performance.
1.7 Coordinates network connectivity management, including configuring DHCP and DNS services, and troubleshooting connectivity issues.
1.8 Manages users’ access to server resources by configuring domain groups, user accounts, and profiles.
1.9 Monitors access to shared folders and shared devices (e.g., printers, faxes).
1.10 Monitors access to web services, including configuring web and FTP services, controlling security access, and maintaining service availability.
1.11 Manages and monitors remote access to server resources (e.g., dial-up, VPN); ensures secure remote access.
1.12 Ensures server reliability and availability by managing backup procedures and data recovery in case of system failure.
1.13 Monitors user activity within the server environment.

2.0 Desktop Support

2.1 Organizes and performs desktop software installations, both manually and automatically.
2.2 Liaises with the team regarding software upgrades and troubleshooting.
2.3 Implements and manages file systems, including access to shared files, offline file management, and file encryption.
2.4 Administers hardware devices and drivers, controls access to printers, and troubleshoots device driver issues.
2.5 Monitors and optimizes system performance and reliability, manages hardware profiles, and applies measures to restore system functionality in case of failure.
2.6 Manages the desktop environment, including user profiles, desktop settings, accessibility services, local security settings, and remote administration.
2.7 Implements network services, including configuring LAN and internet connections, email services, firewall monitoring, and browser security settings.

3.0 Help Desk Support

3.1 Handles and logs support calls.
3.2 Conducts initial problem diagnosis.
3.3 Identifies and isolates the root cause of issues related to IFMIS applications, desktop applications, operating systems, databases, or networks.
3.4 Refers problems to the appropriate support personnel.

  • Successful installation and upgrading of desktop software.

  • Properly implemented network services.

3. Help Desk Support

  • Prompt response and efficient logging of support calls.
  • Accurate initial problem diagnosis and issue identification.
  • Efficient referral of problems to relevant support personnel.
  • Well-documented procedures and standards for the help desk function.
  • Production of useful technical articles for helpdesk user guidance.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Education and Training

  • Degree in Computer Science/Information Systems

Other Relevant Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of RDMS, network, and operating systems (both network and desktop).
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently when required.
  • Ability to work flexibly and as part of a team.

  • Knowledge and expertise in server operating systems (e.g., Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Server, Unix/Linux).

  • Regular consultations with supervisors.
