About the Internship

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is at the center of the global effort to address climate change. The secretariat supports the Convention, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement by providing substantive and organizational support to meetings of the Parties and assisting with the implementation of climate commitments.

This internship is based in the Mitigation Division, Regulatory Framework Implementation (RFI) Team, which supports the development of regulatory guidelines, standards, and policies related to greenhouse gas (GHG) estimation, mitigation actions, Article 6.4 mechanism methodologies, and greenhouse gas removal activities.

The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer (RFI Removal Unit) and the general guidance of the Methodologies Unit and Removal Unit Team Leads.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will support the implementation of the Mitigation Division’s work programme by:

  • Conducting desk research on methodological issues related to greenhouse gas removal activities and emission reductions.
  • Collecting, compiling, and analyzing data related to standards for removals and emission reductions.
  • Evaluating trends and potential opportunities regarding greenhouse gas removal activities and related standards.
  • Assisting in preparing reports, research papers, technical documents, and other written outputs.
  • Supporting Article 6.4 mechanism experts on methodological standards and research activities.
  • Assisting in organizing meetings, workshops, and events related to Article 6.4 methodologies and greenhouse gas removal activities.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Internship Duration

The internship will last six months.

The exact start and end dates will depend on organizational requirements and the availability of the selected candidate.

The internship is expected to be performed on-site in Bonn, Germany. Depending on visa or internship permit requirements, selected candidates may complete part of the internship remotely.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following conditions throughout the internship:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent); or
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).

Educational Background

University studies should be in one of the following fields:

  • Engineering
  • Environmental Sciences
  • Economics
  • Or another closely related discipline

Courses covering climate change, greenhouse gas estimation, and sustainable development are highly desirable.

Relevant professional experience in related fields will be considered an advantage.

Required Skills

  • Working knowledge of English (written and spoken).
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.

IT Requirements

For any remote portion of the internship, candidates must have:

  • A laptop or desktop computer running Windows 10 (or newer) or the latest version of macOS.
  • Reliable high-speed internet access.
  • An up-to-date antivirus program.
  • A modern web browser with automatic updates enabled.
  • Windows devices must have regular system updates enabled.
  • A mobile phone capable of receiving SMS or using the Microsoft Authenticator App for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

An Office 365 license will be provided by UNFCCC.

Internship Conditions

  • This internship is unpaid.
  • Interns are responsible for their own:
    • Travel expenses
    • Accommodation
    • Medical insurance
    • Living costs
  • Interns are not considered UN staff members.
  • The internship is full-time (40 hours per week).
