Storm Mountain Diamonds (Pty) Ltd (‘SMD’) operates a kimberlite diamond mine at Kao, Lesotho. The kimberlite pipe is the largest in Lesotho and the fourth largest in Southern Africa. SMD is jointly owned by Namakwa Diamonds Limited and the Lesotho Government. Kao mine has been in full production since 2013 and over 6 million tonnes of material is moved annually. Kao mine is one of the only remaining consistent producers of pink diamonds in the world.

An opportunity for a Mining Manager at Kao mine is available, reporting to the Group Chief Executive Officer. The Mining Manager is to lead the mining process planning, preparation, development, operation and maintenance in a safe, efficient and productive manner within cost parameters and strategic and operational objectives. In addition the Mining Manager acts as the Head of Mining for the group on the group’s executive committee and heads up the Kao mine on a rotational basis.

Kao mine currently have an outsourced mining contract with all assurance functions e.g. geology, short and long term mine planning and survey being insourced.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • Sound knowledge of resources requirements associated with hard rock open pit mining
  • Developing an overall mining strategy linked to the process plant throughput requirements and mine plan
  • Accurately forecasting and facilitating to meeting production and cost objectives
  • Control schedules and resource utilization
  • Monitor, measure and ensure achievement of operational targets and goals through long term, medium and short term planning
  • Plan, organise, monitor, control, solve problems and report work progress to optimise output
  • Plan open pit mining operations, specifying processes, labor usage, and equipment that will result in safe, economical, and environmentally sound extraction of ores
  • Monitor mine production rates to assess operational effectiveness
  • Devise solutions to problems of land reclamation and water and air pollution, such as methods of storing excavated soil and returning exhausted mine sites to natural states
  • Responsible for the analysis and interpretation of production data and information for the compilation of production reports
  • Prepare schedules, reports, and estimates of the costs involved in developing and operating the mine
  • Prepare technical reports for use by mining, engineering, and management personnel
  • Good understanding of massive ore body mining methods, geology, survey, ventilation, rock engineering, project management and SHE Understanding of technical services functions i.e. survey, geology, sampling etc.
  • Adequate level of understanding of how businesses work and knowledgeable on current practices, trends and information affecting the business
  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules and legislation (Mine Health and Safety Act and Mining Act) In depth knowledge of open pit mining methods, best practices, principles and associated technologies
