for the following position tenable in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry:

Position: Meteorologist
Grade: G
Responsible To: Senior Meteorologist
No. of Positions: Two (2)


JOB SUMMARY
Reports to the Senior Meteorologist and is responsible for analyzing weather and climate data to derive products. Issues meteorological products and advisories to various users, especially in agriculture, water, air transport, and construction.


MAIN DUTIES

1. ANALYSIS OF METEOROLOGICAL DATA
1.1 Analyse raw meteorological data received from meteorological stations to prepare weather forecasts and derive other products
1.2 Study and monitor daily weather and climate patterns and continuously improve understanding of the country’s climate

2. PROVISION OF SERVICES
2.1 Issue accurate weather forecasts in a timely manner
2.2 Issue climatological products that satisfy user needs
2.3 Avail oneself for training to improve competence
2.4 Run operational climate models to detect trends in climate and climate change

3. NATIONAL CLIMATE DATA RECORDS
3.1 Develop and maintain the national climate data bank and archives
3.2 Manage and protect meteorological station networks


JOB SPECIFICATION

Education and Training

  • Master’s in Meteorology or any Environmental Science with a minimum of 2 years’ working experience as a Weather Forecaster
    OR
  • Honours in Meteorology, Postgraduate Diploma in Meteorology, or BSc Degree with a minimum of 4 years’ experience as a Weather Forecaster

RESPONSIBILITY

For the Work of Others
Supervises 5 weather forecasters and other technical staff

For Government Property and Funds
Responsible for protecting equipment valued at over M4 million located at meteorological stations across the country

For Effect of Errors
Errors in forecasts or data can impact weather-based decision-making across sectors

For the Safety of Others
Ensures operational integrity and safety at remote meteorological observation stations


COMPLEXITY

Decision Making
Recommends/advises the Senior Meteorologist on issues related to the wellbeing of staff and national meteorological services

Problem Solving
Resolves challenges related to service gaps in meteorological support for agriculture, water resources, and other sectors

Supervision Received
Expected to work independently and report section activities to the Senior Meteorologist


CONTACTS
The incumbent will engage with the agriculture, water, health, forestry, energy, conservation, aviation sectors, the Disaster Management Authority, the public, and international meteorological organizations

Ensures continuous operation of meteorological observation stations, including during weekends and holidays
