APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED FROM SUITABLY QUALIFIED LOCAL CANDIDATES FOR THE FOLLOWING POSITIONS IN THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTRY.

POSITION: METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVER
DEPARTMENT: LESOTHO METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES
GRADE: B
NO. OF POSITIONS: ONE (1)
RESPONSIBLE TO: TECHNICAL ASSISTANT
LOCATION: QUTHING
JOB SUMMARY
Reports to the Technical Assistant and carries out observations of meteorological elements at prescribed times and transmits them to the Weather Office and Lesotho Meteorological Services Headquarters for proper archiving.
MAIN DUTIES
- Compile data in easily usable formats.
- Ensure proper recording of the instruments on charts.
- Fill in Synop, Metar and Climate forms.
- Routinely maintain and clean the station as the major responsibility.
- Guard for the safety of the station.
- Ensure rapid communication of the information from the station to Meteorology Headquarters.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
C.O.S.C with Credit in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry, plus two (2) years working experience on Rainfall Observation.
OR
G.C.E plus three (3) years working experience on Rainfall Observation.
RESPONSIBILITY
For the Work of Others
Collaborate closely with Technical and Local Government Officers.
For Government Property
Ensures safety of equipment at duty station worth over M100,000.00, including weather observing and communication equipment.
For Effects of Errors / Safety of Others
Error in observations directly leads to inaccurate weather forecasts, construction, design plans and research findings.
COMPLEXITY
Authority for Decision Making
Makes spot decisions to rectify inaccurate readings caused by malfunctioning equipment.
Problem Solving
Immediately reports malfunctioning and vandalism problems.
Supervision
Works independently, but under the supervision of Technical Assistant.

Continuous contact with Headquarters and District Local Government Officers.

The job requires dedication and a high level of concentration when recording observations to maintain high level of accuracy.
