This is a Permanent Contract in Sales, seconded into the Medical Department on a Short Term Assignment. The successful candidate will be based in a defined area as per the company strategy for a period of 12 months (renewable).

Location: Gauteng (Pretoria, Johannesburg)

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL’s) will:

Provide support across the assigned Metabolism therapeutic area based upon the needs identified within BI. MSL will be actively involved with building scientific relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOL’s) and other External Experts within the external healthcare landscape.

The accountabilities of the position are as follows:

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) will represent Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) in providing an advanced product and therapeutic area information to selected Healthcare Professionals (HCP’s) and/or Healthcare Organisations (HCO’s). The information provided by the MSL will focus on risk management, patient profiling, product safety, pharmacovigilance. This position will focus on the following therapeutic areas:

  • Metabolism (Diabetes, Cardiovascular Risk, Heart Failure and Chronic Kidney Disease) (100%)

The role includes:

  • Selection of, and providing scientific information to, internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist the cross functional team in the identification of HCPs and HCOs for scientific engagements
  • Organisation of and/or involvement in scientific events, including:
  • Clinician Peer-to-Peer communications
  • Round Table discussions
  • Continuing Medical Education meetings
  • Advisory Board meetings
  • Expert Input Forums
  • Medical Conferences
  • Identification of speakers and assisting with speaker briefings
  • Monitoring therapeutic information, activities, and publications
  • Internal training
  • Involvement in the implementation of the integrated brand plans / strategies
  • Providing reports of activities, environments and scientific events conducted or attended
  • Establishing themselves as reliable and trusted resources of accurate, up-to-date medical and scientific knowledge requested by both internal and external stakeholders. The MSL will respond in a timely manner to all enquiries and ensure that these interactions are recorded.
  • Sharing feedback of HCP and HCO internally, which will include:
    • Impressions and opinions of clinical data, guidelines, position statements and other scientific publications.
    • Understanding of therapeutic area’s landscapes
    • Therapeutic area and treatment pattern trends
    • Any other insights gathered
  • Interpretation and writing of scientific literature
  • Screening of Current Awareness Literature updates for the respective therapeutic area
  • Attending external national and international scientific meetings
  • Conducting regular literature searches and library research
  • Added responsibilities include:
    • Interaction, support and engagement throughout South Africa, Namibia and Botswana as determined by Medical needs

Key personal requirements / Key competencies

  • Minimum Honours level Health Sciences degree (e.g. MB ChB / MD / PhD / D Sc. / MSc / BSc (Hons) / B Pharm)
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Medical Sales rep position
  • An individual looking to expand their academic and medical knowledge
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Advanced presentation and computer skills with expertise in literature identification and evaluation
  • Highly motivated and capable to learn large amounts of scientific content which is then communicated in a clear, concise fashion (data dissemination) through letters or presentations and one to one meetings
  • Intellectual curiosity about the field of science/medicine for which they are responsible
  • Ability to work effectively and share information within a team environment
  • Excellent self-management skills and ability to adapt services provided based on customer needs
  • Good understanding of business and commercial environment
  • Ability to travel locally and internationally
