PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To coordinate and lead emergency preparedness and rescue activities, provide advice on the development and implementation of emergency patient management services, oversee and ensure operational readiness for emergency calls, administer patient care in line with scope of practice, deliver First Aid, Basic life support and Fire Fighting training for Kao Mine employees, monitoring of all hazardous chemical substances on site on monthly basis and assisting in the overall implementation of the Health and Safety Management System.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & RELATED EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Care
• National Diploma in Emergency Care or National Diploma in any medically related field e.g. medicine, nursing as a minimum
• Advanced Life support
• Intermediate Life support (AEA) Certificate, Nursing Certificate
• 4 years in Mining experience or accident and emergency management
• A valid driver’s license
• Registered with either Lesotho nursing council or Medical Pharmaceutical and dental council of Lesotho

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Emergency Preparedness:
    • Determine Possible Emergencies and Carry out risk assessments to identify hazards for designated areas Combine hazards (medical, environmental, and occupational Health) to establish risks
    • Develop detailed response and resourcing plans for each risk
    • Submit plans to Health and Safety Manager for approval
    • Update response and resourcing plans annually or as required
    • Develop plans covering drills and emergency reactions and obtain approval from HS Manager
    • Coordinate Business Continuity Plans based on the contemplated Emergencies
  2. Emergency Resource and Development:
    • Ensure availability of medical equipment and emergency equipment.
    • Establish, Resource and Maintain Rescue Team
    • Ensure that emergency team members are appointed
    • Provide further training and refresher training and maintain records
    • Perform emergency drills through simulation exercises
    • Identify medical equipment requirements and submit to HSE Manager for approval
  3. Hazardous Chemical Management:
    • Monitor Hazardous Chemical Substances
    • Monitor chemical substances have material safety data sheets
    • Ensure users receive training on safe chemicals handling
    • Monthly inspections of Hazardous chemicals stores
    • Conduct and update Compatibility studies for chemical storage
  4. Aviation Medical Management
    • Patient assessment to identify if patient meet criteria
    • Liaise with service providers including Lesotho Defence Force Fly wing for availability
    • Ensure safe landing of helicopter and safe loading of patients
    • Ensure availability of emergency equipment when required
