Applications are invited from suitably qualified local candidates for the following vacant position tenable at the Southern Division of the High Court in Mohale’s Hoek:
JOB TITLE: Mediator
GRADE: I
NO. OF POSTS: Two (2)
RESPONSIBLE TO: Mediation Administrator
Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Mediation Administrator, the incumbent is responsible for carrying out court-annexed mediation in civil disputes.
Main Duties
1. To Facilitate Communication and Negotiation Between Disputing Parties
1.1 Sets the dates for mediation.
1.2 Guides the discussion between the parties.
1.3 Assists the parties in identifying the issues and understanding each other’s perspectives.
1.4 Identifies areas of agreement and disagreement.
1.5 Explores areas of compromise.
1.6 Assists the parties in brainstorming and identifying creative solutions.
1.7 Documents agreements reached.
1.8 Ensures all parties understand and agree to the terms before signing the settlement agreement.
1.9 Facilitates the process of making the settlement agreement an order of the court.
2. To Prepare Court-Annexed Mediation Reports
2.1 Writes the mediation report where mediation has failed.
2.2 Prepares weekly returns.
2.3 Prepares lists of cases allocated, settled, completed, and referred to litigation.
2.4 Compiles and submits monthly reports.
Job Specification
- Master of Law (LLM) plus four (4) years of relevant working experience
OR - Bachelor of Laws (LLB) plus five (5) years of relevant working experience
- Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Mechanisms is an added advantage

Hazards: Risk of attack by dissatisfied individuals involved in disputes
